So I upgraded to the recent release of firmware 2000.1231 which states it has Lion compatibility, yet it still doesn't work.
If I set up for Time Machine I can see it when I select a disk, but I get the error:
The operation couldn't be completed. (OSStatus error 2.) after being asked for the admin userid & password.
What gives... anyone else have this working?

Oh well, I was hoping it to be isolated case. I got same error.
Although it seems that generaly it is working for most users since forum is quiet...

Me too...not sure what gives, no search results anywhere for this error. Any news?

Interestingly on my BA110 with the new 1221 fw..
my Snow Leopard Mac, has now started backing up to my main data volume, not one that I created specifically to have the time machine data separate, which used to work perfectly, until now...
I think seagate rushed this new firmware out... (again)

I contacted Seagate support directly some time ago since the new firmware brought to me OSstatus 2 error as well, wanted to get to the bottom of it. After trying their reccomendations and none worked I got their last reccomendation:
I was able to discuss this further with our technicians and they recommend that you replace the device at the place of purchase.

Seagate's support is a JOKE. I don't know what they think they are playing at.. We pay good money for their devices, they release an update to provide support for something new (which doesn't work) and breaks more things in the process... and then they say, oh, get a replacement.
SO SIMPLY NOT HELPFUL, I do hope someone from seagate stumbles across this post.

Hi,
I have been contacted by seagate support with these instructions:
"On the web admin page:
1. If it applies, delete the volume from under Storage?Volumes, then rebuild it.
2. Storage?Backup Manager?Backup Server?disable Time Machine there, then click on clean up this repository, then enable it.
3. Go to Time Machine and see if you can now back it up to the drive.
4. If not, then please make sure you make a new user name and share and use this new user's login information to set Time Machine up."
This procedure works for me and now both Lion and Snow are working with Time Machine.
There is only one issue: YOU LOOSE ALL YOUR PREVIOUS BACKUPS!
In my case it means 1.5 TB of data ![]()

!! PavolH - THANK YOU VERY MUCH !! ![]()

I got the same instructions as PavolH but I did not see point to post them since they are doing noting in my case :/

Holy cow, two months and it is working at last! Seagate support must know what they are talking about ![]()
Anyway, following their directions did not help a thing but when I tried as PavolH described it worked suddenly! ![]()
Still, it is last network based Seagate product I will buy ever...

THANK YOU!!! As others, this will be the last Seagate product I buy.
Some observations on doing mine, if it will help anybody. The instructions have a slight order-of-operations mix around in step 2. You may have been able to, but I couldn't click "Clean up this repository" after disabling it -- I had to re-enable it to click "Clean up this repository". Also, as he mentioned in the notes, but I would add it as a step, I had to add a Share for that volume and then add my newly created username to it (just gave it Admin rights since i'm only one using it and not close to neighbors who could get my wifi signal).
Once I did that, in Lion I opened Time Machine, and it found the Seagate device (ironically, not named anything close to what I named the volume or the share, it was "BA_Backup"...but oh well) and it's backing up now.
Again, thank you for posting this information, it was super helpful!

Well I've tried everything listed above and even some other suggestions and nothing works. Tomorrow I'm getting a Time Capsule and ditching this expensive paperweight. I'm not going to blame Seagate for Apple changing specs. However, I am going to blame Seagate for not having a real fix out (without losing all my previous backups) for over two months after the release of 10.7 (and for much longer if you count the beta period), and much worse, being so uncommunicative about this problem. This is the last Seagate product I'm buying, and I'll never recommend them again.

Unfortunately, after upgrade to Lion 10.7.2 Time Machine suddenly lost previous backups.
The problem with (OSStaus error 2) is back and even I did described process several times, issue persists.
Communication with support has started looking for the results...

Are you able to browse that volume via the Finder bjmiller22?
While Time Machine is backing up, I can browse via a "Time Machine Backups" item that is listed, but otherwise, if I try and connect to the strange Volume, it won't accept my credentials.

As a final result, the RMA procedure has been adviced by the support to replace the NAS.
However, the RMA is a nightmare:
1. HW has been sent (Nov, 2) day after RMA was opened (Nov, 1)
2. Delivered to the collection point (Nov, 3)
3. No delivery confirmation from Seagate - escalated, confirmed after receipt sent (Nov, 14)
4. After several escalations, the feedback on RMA status (no shipment of the new HW yet):
"Dear Mr. xxxxxx,
We sincerely apologize for the delay and unfortunately need to advise there will be a further delay in shipping a product equivalent to the device that you sent to Seagate for replacement.
This unit is not in our inventory for your region and we are currently discussing a solution to receive this model for replacement purposes from other regions so we can fulfill your order.
We will advise you of the outcome as soon as possible.
I assure you we will find a solution but request your patience."
5. Nov, 29 - still no update and waiting
Update will be posted.

Hi,
As this NAS is like as user unfriendly as could be, I with all respect expect you folks to be able to at least open Terminal and paste a code.
I have applied this little tweak in Terminal
defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1 |
It lest Time Machine show unsupported drives... Just as simple as that.
My disk showed up no problem, with Time MAchine option turned off in the we interface of the NAS.
It appears there are mixed results, and for your reference I paste this link as well:
besides some more elaborate procedure (it's not in the original post, but a bit lower, 2nd reply) it contains interesting thoughts in the last post. Actually I give it as a disclaimer as it makes me conclude that Time Machine on non supported disks has a slight risk. A slight risk for potential errors in copying files, and thus in inadequately providing a perfect restore. Id say it's good for every day recovery of files and folders, but not a 100% proof solution if ever you need to recover a whole system. I'll take the chance though...
I wish you all good luck, and better choice of hardware in the future, so we all can spent our limited life a bit more usefull instead of having to fiddle about with lousy stuff.
Harddisks by Seagate are top notch, but why did they start going out of their league and juxtapose the quality???

The RMA has been arrived on Dec, 17.
It seems to be refurbished hardware, however, it looks new and works fine by now, TimeMachine included on all my Macs.
One issue only, it is a little bit more noisy.
If there is any problem, I post it here.
