As we knew, there are lots of compatible problems with the Momentus XT.
But Seagate didn't give us a solution or even a response.
Why do we need to waste so much time for this? it's not fair for everybody and people who trust Seagate.
I want to collect all the problems&info and send to Seagate again.
If they still ignore those issues, I'll release those info to mass media.
So, please help me to fill in the information as follow format, and please forward this link to internet/forum/website... as you can...

4. 500GB drive. Came with SD23 installed. First week and a half, awesome. I have never seen Visio load so quickly, or Windows resume from suspend that fast. In the last couple of days: drive light comes on solid for around five seconds, every 30 seconds perhaps. Machine "freezes" when you go to do something, pausing for around 3-5 seconds. It got to the point where I actually went and poked around my machine to see if there was a key logger or some other sort of trojan/virus on the machine just in case, but all my protection is up to date and didn't report any issues.

2. MacBook Pro 15''(late 2009)
3. Mac OS 10.6.4 fresh install
4.1 SD22: constantly spin up and spin down, random beach balls, battery time reduced by 1h
4.2 SD23: no spin down, drive runs constantly, battery power reduced by 2.5h
5. 320GB Momentus XT SD23
as a sight note:
Start Stop Count: 18707
Power On Hours: 309
Load Cycle Count: 17713
I feel, the numbers for the Start Stop and Load Cycle Count are very high specially when I look to the max. numbers in the product manual:
Load/Unload (U/UL) cycles: 600,000 software-controlled power on/off cycles 50,000 hard power on/off cycles
this would mean that after approx. 438 days the max. Load/Unload limit is reached?
any comments/recommendations are highly appreciated

Joy,
May I ask in what context your RAID0 attempts occurred? Is your MacBook a dual-bay? If not, how are you connecting each drive? Thanks!
And you said "10.6.x" - is that 10.6.4, do you know?

What were you working on when the freezes first began?
What do you work on when you experience them now?
Can you boot up to W7 and just let it sit idle, and does the OS still freeze like that?

AlanM:
I don't really remember what I was working on specifically when it first happened, I just started to notice that my machine was chugging along, then noticed the drive light pattern.
I notice the problem most when I am typing anything, be that an email in Outlook 2007 or Gmail via Google Chrome, a Word document or even this post. The hard drive activity/surging seems to happen pretty constantly, irrespective of if I am doing something or not. If I leave the machine alone for a little while it looks like it is still doing it (the drive activity light comes and off it's usual way). When I go to do something after leaving it alone, say open Windows Explorer or something like that, it will sit and surge for 5 or so seconds at that point, before it does what I have asked of it and it then continues to perform in it's usual pattern.
I ran performance monitor on the hard drives for a little while to see if there was anything out of the ordinary writing or reading to disk but didn't see anything out of place.
Hmmmm.............was just thinking. For the first week and a half when things were fine I pretty constantly used Outlook, Google Chrome and Visio (I was doing some technical designs). After this point I have used Visio less, but used more other programs like Word, Excel, etc. One thing I did do was run two of my VMware Workstation virtual machines (not at the same time!). One is a Linux VM and the other is a Windows VM. I run the latest fully patched version of VMware workstation, with the virtual machine templates and VMware tools updated also.
Perhaps a coincidence with the whole VMware thing, but something to consider never the less.
Update: This is getting ridiculous now. I now get frequent unable to load page errors in Chrome as the drive goes solid when I try to connect to a web page. Going back to my other 500GB Momentus. It has a death rattle but at least it works! I will try the drive again when a new firmware is released.

Hallo,
I bought Momentus XT 500 GB (FW SD23) - I have cloned my Windows 7 system with Aconis True Image, when the momentus was connected via USB external case, it worked fine and no freezing, but when I removed my old disk and connected momentus xt directly to SATA port of my laptop and started windows problems started. It started to "freeze" - i could move my mouse cursor, but for abut 30 seconds I couldn't do anything else then I have seen HDD led went again on and it worked properly. Few minutes later - freeze again, HDD led off for approx. 30 sec. and like this every few minutes. I have installed fresh windows 7 and the same - during installation it seemed it worked fine, but then what it started the same.
My hardware:
1. Laptop
2. HP Pavilion TX2100ed (tablet pc)
3. Windows 7 32 bit
4. Freezing for dozen of seconds every 2-3 minutes.
Thanks for help. I was very excited, I could boost my laptop's performance, but now I am very disappointed.
I have put back the old HDD

5. Momentus XT 320GB with SD23 Firmware
6. Screen locks up - most times hdd light is dead along with screen. sometimes screen remains but is locked - both have dead hdd light
I find it hard to replicate the issue, but first noticed issue on first day of installing momentus drive. Was watching large (1.97GB) AVCHD video and moving it around a bit (picking scenes for editing). Usually cuts out about 5min in or so.
I have some temp software running - hottest it has been is 49 degrees but usually sits around 39.

Just posted some observations about the Apple Macbook built in Sudden Motion Sensor in the Firmware update thread. Don't want to double post but maybe you'd like to hear that disabling the SMS might fix your problems. Take a look at the Momentus XT FW update thread.

Disappointed.
Just fixing the spin-down issue and the SMS drive lock is all I need. Otherwise it's a great drive. Come on Seagate, I used to recommend your drives - not sure I can any more.

It sucks to be in a game, get a feeze up and when it ends your dead. Happens like 2-3 times per minute. I like the drive, but this bug is unacceptable. I'm using SD23 firmware too. I get no replies from seagate support. Oh yea, and the drive light lights up solid like the other peoples when this happens.

Installation is a clean image of XP SP3 using intel rapid store technology AHCI driver.
After a period of time (perhaps 30 minutes, variable) any applications not in system RAM stop working.
That is if a program (like Internet explorer or seatools) is running it continues to run, however if I try to open or reopen an application the system freezes and must be crashed to reboot.
I have upgraded the firmware to SD23
I have tried several APM disabling programs.
I have changed graphics cards and the PC Power Supply (Seasonic)
Seatools Long tests all pass.
The image works without any problems on a conventional drive (Samsung 1 TByte which is what I am currently using)
Of course the supplier is not prepared to accept the drive is faulty even after explaining that I can demonstrate the problem.
Does any one have any suggestions.
regards,
Marty

5. XT 500GB, SD23 Firmware
Used Windows backup client to restore my system onto the momentus XT. Worked fine on 3 other drives, a 320GB WD, 500GB WD and 500GB Seagate, all 7200rpm. Nice speed increase but I'm relying on a working laptop. Cost me a couple of hours and I will consider this hardware fix as a benchmark for seagate to come up with solutions. This will decide if I (and my co-workers) stay a seagate user. Although I'm an early adopter I cannot play beta tester when it destroys data and eats up my time.
I hope you can fix it,
thanks Chris.

4. Having occasional blue screens when loading Windows XP. Sometimes, about 50% when booting my netbook, Windows XP takes a very long time to load and eventually gives a blue screen. The blue screen tells me there might be something wrong with my hard disk and tells me to run CHKDSK /F but CHKDSK does not show anything wrong. Very annoying because one of the reasons that I bought this drive was to decrease boot times. You can find more information about this issue in my previous post: http://forums.seagate.com/t5/Momentus-XT-Momentus-

4. ST95005620AS. Firmware SD23. Not jumpered for sata1 cause i didn't have the jumper with the drive.
The drive only ever spins down once every couple of hours, only to immediately start up again. Very poor battery life, as it sucks down 1-2% of battery capacity a minute! (previously had over 3 hours of battery life). Very hot. Vibrates like crazy. Bloody noisy.
I'm not impressed.
Please fix the spin-down problem and let the OS idle the drive. Or just bite the bullet and give us a firmware update to reduce the RPM of the drive (if that's possible)!
Despite the problems the drive is very fast. I'd be happy if you could fix the drive spin-down issue, either by making it's power management actually work, or by reducing the RPM by some amount.
I previously bought seagate drives for my raid array, and had no problems with them, but the momentus xt has got some issues that are damaging your rep.
Peter.

I forgot to mention that my hard drive makes a lot of high pitch noise when unpacking files with WinRAR, is this normal behaviour? The entire class room could hear the hard drive while unpacking the file and people started asking questions if there was something wrong with my laptop. I would like to know if I should return my hard drive or should consider this as normal behaviour?

3.Windows 7 64 bit
4.Running fine with the exception of an intermittend high pitched short duration noise coming from the drive, same noise as heard here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsg84yqzvhs
I do not notice any hiccup or lag however. The noise occurs approximately every hour or so, randomly. I ran this drive in my laptop for a few weeks prior to moving it to this desktop, and in the laptop, the noise was MUCH less frequent and was very rare if it happened at all (only a few times that I ever noticed), however in the desktop I hear the noise a few times a day.
Besides that noise issue I am not experiencing performance issues

2.Lenovo Thinkpad T510
3.Windows 7 Professional
4.Drive would freeze up and Windows would fail (BSoD). After this happened for a week, now my computer won't boot into Windows anymore. Windows will try to boot but the freeze up happens consistently mid-boot leading to Windows failure.
Running SeaTools right now. Passed the short test. Long test in progress. I'm pulling my data off and going back to the original drive.

joeri,
Two things:
1) If the drive is making the noise you described, I would replace it.
http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/warranty_
2) Please remember that this is an online community where many of the responses come from other users, such as yourself. The forum is not a replacement for Customer Service. Seagate representative do from time to time come to lend a hand answering posts but not necessarily on a continual or frequent basis. If you have immediate needs, your best bet is to contact Customer Service directly whether by phone, email, or chat.
09-03-2010 07:29 AM
hi Alan.
I'm glad you are watching this list from time to time. You mention that the right avenue is customer service. I put in a case number just about 2 weeks ago to try to go through channels. So far, no response. So thats really not a good sign
and like the rest of the people on this particular thread, I'm trying to be patient and wait for responses - but I do have to say that it seems nobody cares about the fact that this particular hard drive is exhibiting serios problems.
even you have mentioend you are watching this thread... but you have not weighed in with anything constructive to assist like 'engieering is looking at it', or 'a problem has been identified', or 'firmware update is being alpha tested'.
Communication is all important here. I can wait an infinite amount of time if I know a solution is in progress. without that communication, all that you'll probably see is bad press.
and it really seems that Seagate doesn't care. It would be too bad because the momentus XT is a fantastic product concept - I loved using it for the 3 months that it worked. I'm now on my 3rd and 4th replacement drives and I have put something in place to save my butt by doing disk copies each day and more often than not backups...
simply because I still believe. and if Seagate wants to restore confidence in what could be a killer product concept for laptops, they need to take action through communication and updates for us early adopters.
I, and I'm sure a bunch of others, are awaiting at least some news that something is in the wind.
Communicate to us regularly, its probably all most of us want.

1. Notebook
2. Thinkpad W500
3. W7 64bit Ultimate
4. Momentus XT 500GB SD22 (update somehow fails when it tries to identify the drive, might reboot and try again later)Frequent freezing. Drive works great for like 2~4 weeks, then it starts to freeze the system, to me it appears that read/write (one or the other, or both) operation are frozen and windows is waiting FOREVER for the drive to respond. Often it will appear as the screen frozen with mouse sometimes still able to move (but can't click on anything), or froze when it screen saver is active. This constant crashing happen about every few hours, sometimes work fine for as long as 24 to 36 hours before crashing. I have a gut feeling that it happens more often when temperature is higher, and because the summer is very hot here, the drive also work in hotter condition. HOWEVER, from SMART information, the drive's highest temperature is only up to 50C, which is still 10C below the max operating temperature.
The presistent problem made it impossible to use it as production drive, I have now replaced it with a WD drive, both my previous Seagate Momentus 7200.3 320GB drive and the new WD drive work flawlessly even when at higher tempreatures.
PLEASE fix this problem, it is driving me nuts, everyone here paid twice as much as regular HDD for Momentus XT, and we do want to use it, but constant crashing made it impossible, and unusable.

Doug is hitting the nail on its head here. Communication is key, it's unbelievable that companies still don't understand this. Just give the status on what's going on!? Is somebody looking at it, are there already fixes being tested, is nobody looking at it because they're working on the XT2 which has all the flaws of the XT fixed???? WHAT IS GOING ON???
It seems they don't understand they're hurting their own business. I for instances was in doubt between the XT and an SSD (Vertex2) for my new Mac mini. With all the bad news over here, and no sign of fixes, I went for the SSD. Sorry Seagate... again: tell us what's in the pipeline for the XT.

WD can thank Seagate that they have one extra sale because of their Momentus XT problems.

Joeri (and others that have a drive that makes noise),
Is your noise the same as the noise in this youtube clip?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsg84yqzvhs
I know it is a different drive, but I get the exact same noise. It happens maybe a few times an hour approximately in my computer. I don't get any freezes etc when the noise occurs though but it is extremely annoying to me. I am in the process of looking for an SSD to replace this drive with. I really should have just gotten a lower capacity (64gb) SSD as I'm mostly just using this drive for the operating system in my desktop.
Please let me know if any of you have this same type of noise problem!!
