OneTouch 4 "Selectively" Working

I have a 750GB Maxtor One Touch 4 external drive. My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 5150 running on Windows XP Professional and has the latest updates. I've had the drive for about two years, and it worked perfectly until about a month ago. As the subject says, the drive has been selectively working. It worked all week with no issues, but they started again today.

I've been through the troubleshooting wizard, the SeaTools thing, virus/malware/adware scans, and have uninstalled and reinstalled the software a couple of times. I haven't visited any websites out of the ordinary and haven't downloaded anything other than Windows updates.

Some of the issues:

  • Drive stops at random, causing the laptop to blue screen. Will get a pic if it happens again since I can't remember what it tells me to do.
  • Laptop will refuse to acknowledge the drive - "Unknown/Unrecognized USB device" bubble.
  • Laptop will tell me that the device could work better/faster/whatever if plugged into a USB 2.0 port... even though it is.
  • Pop-up asking me to re-format the drive because it's improperly formatted or something... I've never done anything to it.
  • Laptop sometimes (though this happens least often) will not boot up with the drive plugged into the USB port.

Again, this is a totally random thing, as the drive just worked for a week straight without issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I'm at a loss right now.
