One Touch 4 Mini no longer being recognized (250GB)

I have been using a One Touch 4 Mini 250GB almost daily for the last 2 years

i used it at home on my Mac OS and at school on Windows machines.

Its never given me any problems either Operating System with files going between the two regularly.

Now out of the blue the drive doesn't seem to be popping up on my list of drives.

Macs or PCs cant find it and i have a lot important school work on there that isn't backed up unfortunately.

The light on the drive will blink once and then stays on after plugging in the USB, but nothing shows up.

I tried using a different Usb cable that belonged to my brother's portable Toshiba hard drive but it still didnt work.

Not sure what my options are at this point for either fixing my Portable HD or at least recovering the data

any suggestions are welcomed, thanks

Re: One Touch 4 Mini no longer being recognized (250GB)

I am having the same exact problem with my drive (500gb) and i was told by tech support to replace the power supply. i dont think that will fix the problem, as it is already receiving power obviously. none of the troubleshooting they offer is of any help either.

Re: One Touch 4 Mini no longer being recognized (250GB)

sounds familiar to me, but ive had my one touch 500GB recognised already so the power lead and usb are fine. ive tried other leads as well just now to see if its those that are the problem but I am still having issues.

Re: One Touch 4 Mini no longer being recognized (250GB)

I am having the exact same issue.  Power exists and is working, USB cable works fine (XP file manager sees the drive and contents), but the Maxtor OneTouch manager does not show the drive in its list.  It states: "No external drives were found. Make sure your external drive is connected and turned on."

This seems to be a common issue folks are running into.  Would be nice if we could get some help and an answer or two....

Re: One Touch 4 Mini no longer being recognized (250GB)

Hello:
Please try our external drive troubleshooter - http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/troubleshooting_assistance/

If the troubleshooter doesn't resolve your problem, could you please post the report from Microsoft's UVCView utility?
http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/USB_IDs/UVCView.x86.exe (This utility is from one of our forum's most prolific and helpful users - fzabkar.)

Thanks!

Re: One Touch 4 Mini no longer being recognized (250GB)

I had the same problem wit my 500GB Maxtor One Touch 4 Plus. First you have to have the maxtor software installed on any computer you plug the drive into...you prob already know that but just in case. Ever since I got a new computer with Windows 7 the drive would show up in Maxtor manager but was showing the drive as locked. The option to put in my password to unlock it was not available. I tried to click on the drive pass to remove the password and received a message "this devise does not support security". So here was the fix for mine. I installed the maxtor software on my friends computer running Windows XP...pluged in the drive and up pops the window to enter my password. I entered my password and up it pops on my computer. I went to the drive pass in maxtor manager and removed the password. I then pluged the drive into my computer running Windows 7 and the drive pops up on my computer right away. I tried to re-install password in drive pass but again received the message "this devise does not support security". I know this is a long description but I was so upset at those dumb tech guys telling me something stupid was wrong with my drive when I kinda figured it was the password all along. The only challenge is finding a computer with Windows XP or (Vista might work too...try it!!) so you can remove the password.

Re: One Touch 4 Mini no longer being recognized (250GB)

Same Issue

1TB, No drives connected. Out of the blue, light on does not show up in "My Computer" Can find it in "Device Manager" but not under drives, just listed as "maxtor one touch".

Max Manager the drive was locked at one point but now wont even find the drive, and when it said it was locked could not access security Question or reformat.

Secure storage is why I purchased the Max 1T.

Help

And using Seatools,,, failed the smart test but got no warranty code, trying to get the info on the next step,,, process way to difficult.            Help.

Will post a new topic about warranty assistance,,, not clear or easy to access.

Re: One Touch 4 Mini no longer being recognized (250GB)

I'm the original poster and I finally got my data back.

I needed the contents of my drive for school and there was no easy way to get it back.

I asked around some and was told it could have been the motherboard fried on my case so no problem I just went to Comp USA and bought a new case.

I opened up my One Touch Mini and popped it in the new case but no luck, my problem was bigger than that.

The drive itself was damaged and it was going to require expensive data recovery procedures.

99% of you out there would just have cut your loses and scrapped the HD but for me it was going to mean not graduating from school if I didnt get it all back.

I went with a local lab and they did the recovery for me. it ended up costing a total of $980

I got all my data back and learned a lesson to never work off my portable drive.

Re: One Touch 4 Mini no longer being recognized (250GB)

Wow.  $980?!?

My OT4 just started having issues and I, too, was using it to save space on the C drive...and didn't have a SECOND external to back both of them up.  All my photos and music and misc files are on it.

How long did it take for recovery?

Re: One Touch 4 Mini no longer being recognized (250GB)

It took less than a week.

Aside from the procedure being extremely expensive I was quite satisfied with the service.

Also I might add than $980 was on the low end of different quotes I recieved when shopping around.

Running Chkdsk on the external drive may restore it to File Manager

My OneTouch4 drive letter has been disappearing from my File Manager (Windows Explorer) a number of times and fortuitously I discovered that if I run CHKDSK on the Onetouch4 drive the OneTouch4 drive will reappear in the File Manager.

Good Luck

Re: One Touch 4 no longer being recognised

The experience we are having here as users of these products is rubbish, rubbish, rubbish! I am a UK user of One Touch 4, which is no longer being recognised by my laptop (or vice versa). Photographs and fiction, i.e. my life's work, which I thought were safely stored there are now nowhere to be found. I have tried registering twice for a phone call from technical support but a) the UK is not listed as a country worthy of attention (though, ironically, the Malvinas is). What's more, the minute you enter 'Maxtor' on the registration form, the screen goes blank and that's the end of the matter.

This problem is so widespread that Seagate should have issued guidance to all users about what to do in this eventuality. Instead, I notice the link they provide on this forum, takes you back through the series of irrelevant pages that you are likely to have been through several times already. (A waste of yet another working day.)

If I were being cynical, I would say that Seagate were trying to abandon this series of products. I that is correct, then they should be upfront about it, instead of leaving us floundering about like this. I am really annoyed about it, and my heart goes out to the correspondent who had all their educatiional assignments on the so-called storage device and had to pay hundreds of dollars to get it back.

I'd be glad to help you get your Maxtor drive issue resolved.

Please provide me with responses to the following:

  • Which operating system do you have?
  • Have you tried the drive with another computer?
  • If you are using it with a Windows system, does the drive show in Device Manager and Disk Management? If MacOS, does it appear in Disk Utility?
  • Have you tried data recovery software with the drive?

I know it doesn't help in the current situation, but this is some good information to be aware of the future:

What is a Backup?

You mentioned that you tried to get a callback set up with our support staff. Please tell me specifics about this, so that we can address any necessary issues with the process.

Did you also try contacting us for direct support?

When you tried submitting an inquiry about your Maxtor product and the browser screen went blank, did you try another type of browser, for example Chrome or FireFox? Did you try purging your cache?

The link provides useful troubleshooting information for most cases. Unfortunately there are always exceptions and for these we have other support methods available.

Re: One Touch 4 Mini no longer being recognized (250GB)

I am at a loss and very frustrated. Some time ago my Maxtor One Touch 4 stopped accepting files from my pc.  I keep getting an error message saying that the disk is corrupted. I've tried everything I can think of repeatedly and cannot find a way to fix this. I have 117 of 232 gbs unused and do not want to have to purchase another device. I have many photos and considerable data on my pc which I need to back up and I would like to delete much of what is already on this disk but cannot do that, either.. I am not a computer expert nor even a nerd and would very much appreciate any help with this problem.

Re: One Touch 4 Mini no longer being recognized (250GB)

Have you tested the drive with our diagnostic utility that we have available for download?

http://www.seagate.com/support/internal-hard-drives/enterprise-hard-drives/saturn/seatools-win-maste...

Please also try running Windows error-checking on the drive:

Let me know if you need further help.

Re: One Touch 4 Mini no longer being recognized (250GB)

this seems to be a common problem with onetouch 4 mini EHDs. it's very frustrating. i encountered the exact same problem as the one reported on top of this thread. is there a way to fix the problem without having to spend hundreds of dollars in data recovery or return the EHD to have it replaced? i have tons of important data in the EHD that i'm no longer able to access.

Re: One Touch 4 Mini no longer being recognized (250GB)

Hi everyone having problems with One Touch HDDs,

I did not read the full thread, please apologize, but having the problem my external Maxtor OneTouch HDD was not recognized after I plugged it to my new Windows 7 laptop system.

For solution I tried the following:

1. Installed the OneTouch Software (did not help)

The maxtor tool tested the HDD and found it to be OK, but a view of its properties was impossible.

2. Assigned a drive letter for the external HDD (was using Paragon Partition Manager 11)

This may help you too. Try to assign a drive letter either using a partition manager or internal windows 7 tools. Then tend to the Maxtor software and try to fiddle with the security options, e.g. enter your encryption passwort or so on.

Hope being of help to you. Otherwise, I am sorry for bothering you.

I wish you good luck and health for you and your hard drives in the year 2013.

Stefan
