Problem with Windows 7 and Maxtor Personal Storage 3200

I bought a Maxtor Personal Storage 3200 years ago, and used it just fine with two different laptop computers, which ran Windows XP (I think) and Vista respectively.  I moved last year, and had lost the power cord for the device until just tonight.  My current laptop is having power issues and I cannot turn it on, so I tried connecting the external hard drive to my sister's desktop computer, which runs Windows 7.  When I plug it in, it detects the device but the "Devices and Printers" folder on the computer only lists it as "Unknown Device."  It cannot even see that it is a hard drive, just that it is a USB device.  I tried the troubleshooting feature in Windows 7, but nothing happened/got resolved.  Please help!  I have many GB of files I want to access, sort, and/or delete from that device.

Have you also tried updating the USB drivers on the Windows 7 system? We have an excellent article available that might help with this:
