I have just received my Seagate 500 GB external expansion hard drive. There is no software on the hard drive in order to back up my system. It is difficult with the instructions to drag and drop. The instructions on the getting started page indicate that you can either drag and drop or lunch the software that comes with the hard drive. I am a basic user of technology. Does anyone know how to get the back up and restore software from the hard drive or how to download the software for the hard drive?

You can see if there's a software download available for your particular drive model by accessing the following site:
https://apps1.seagate.com/downloads/request.html
If there isn't, you can either use the drive with a third-party backup utility such as Windows backup, or you can use it without any software at all. Should you decide to use the drive without, you can take a look at this knowledge base article for information:

This software is for Windows Diagnostics. It is not software that is supposed to come with the external hard drive for back up. Surely there is someone at Seagate that knows where I can get the software.

If no software is listed on that site, you purchased a version of the model that does not come with the drive. As I had mentioned in my original post, you will need to use with Windows Backup or another third-party utility. We don't have any backup software available for this drive.
