Trying to use my old Maxtor Basics Portable 250GB to back up and transfer a bunch of old documents from my old work computer (Windows XP) to my new work computer (windows 7) or even my old home computer (windows 7 home). When i try to drag the "my documents" folder on my old work computer to the Maxtor, it creates a shortcut. when i connect the maxtor to either of the other computers, the shortcut opens the "my documents" folder on the "new" computer. i tried renaming the old "my documents" but I can't fool the darn thing. what stupid thing am i doing wrong? thanks for any advice!

If you are trying to drag and drop the My Documents icon off your desktop that is only a link.
You need to go to the C:\Documents and Settings\yourusername\ folder and drag and drop (or copy and paste) the My Documents folder from there.
It's not a Maxtor drive issue, it's just how Windows works.
