No luck initializing my Maxtor Basics (Desktop) External Drive - please help!

Hello,

My web designer has given me some important files on a Maxtor Basics -Desktop- external drive SN: 2HBEWN82 - 500GB.

I've connected the drive to my computer, and the following message appears - "the device can perform faster if I connect to a high speed 2.0 port", and I am unable to open the drive on my computer!!

I am using Windows, and when I go into the "system Tools" Device Manager, the drive appears and says that it is "working properly"...But that is no help to me because I can't open the thing!

...When I go into the "System tool" Disk Manager, the drive appears on the list but it says "not initialized" and 465GB is marked "Unallocated".

I havnt been given any installation software, and my computer is quite old. I dont even think I have 2.0 USB ports I think the computer has the older USB ports. Could this be the problem?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks so much!

Re: No luck initializing my Maxtor Basics (Desktop) External Drive - please help!

Please try running chkdsk on the drive.

Also, it looks like there might be some difficulty with this computer, and it seems to me the data might be in danger.

Connect this drive to another computer, ideally the original computer, make a backup of the data, and then try it again.

Give a hoot. Backup your data on a second storage media.

Could we see the partition table and boot sector with Microsoft's Sector Inspector?

Extract the above archive to the one folder and execute the SIrun.bat file. The procedure will generate a report file named SIout.txt.
