I'm only posting this because I have wasted many hours trying to copy large files to Goflex drives (a 3tb and a 4tb) with all kinds of problems. You may want to look in the apple forums for more info on this. I bought the Goflex 3tb and 4tb labled as Mac & PC compatible (USB 3.0, 2.0 compatible) and the problem is the Seagate Mac USB drivers.
The fix is to delete the Seagate driver (which is a "kernel" file - use "find file' - google it - or a similar program to find the driver in your system) and let Mac recognize the drive using it's own USB drivers. Or better yet, ignore the "mac install" file on the drive when you first hook it up and use Mac's disk utility to reformat to Mac OS Jounraled thus bypassing the Seagate driver issue. Either that or get the firewire/USB 2.0 adaptor (about $45). Apparently the firewire driver works, the problem is with the USB 3.0 to USB 2.0 compatibility on a Mac that is USB 2.0 only. The Seagate driver forces the drive to sleep at the wrong time and will not wake. I've tried to copy lage files and sometimes I can copy 50gb without problem, other times it will stall immediately (the status window is still up, but no files are moving), and I can't stop it, or shutdown. Have to do a forced shutdown manually. They will tell you that they fixed this but that is incorrect.
Poor job on Seagate's part in not developing compatible drivers!

I have just found this fix, and have noted that no one from Seagate has responded. Seagate, this is something you need to fix as soon as possible or at least include in your documentation. I have a FreeAgent GoFlex Desk STAC2000303 and this fix worked perfectly.
You wont have the indicator lights at the bottom of the drive indicating capacity anylonger, but everything should work now.
Seagate.. please fix this.

We have released a software update that contains an updated driver and addresses the sleep issues for the GoFlex drives on Mac OS. Please download and install it from here:
Let us know if you need further help.

The update has fixed the sleep problem mostly... but ..Still having issues in that Finder crashes, iMac has to be hard reset as it doesn't respond sometimes. The power light on the drive is off, but the capacity indicator light is on. I have to eject the drive, unplug the USB and then plug it back in again for both the power and capacity indicator lights to function. iMac is a 21.5 inch Mid 2011, 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5, Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D50b) So the fix is better.. but still unstable and unpredictable. Seagate?

Hello. For some time I have had the issue that, whenever my Mac sleeps, I get the message that my GoFlex desk drive was not properly ejected. I saw this with both the FW 800 adapter and the stock USB 2.0 adapter. Originally, I did not have he Seagate software installed. I installed the newest version that you linked to and am still getting this error message. If this cannot be solved shortly, I'm afraid I will need to return to Western Digital external drives. Please help!
04-12-2012 06:04 AM
Nope, your update does not work. After installation (last night 4/11/12) I let the system sit for a while and checked before bed. Everything was sleeping nicely. When I got up the next day I woke up my mac and both drives were not accessible. Time machine failed and neither drive could be opened (woken up) - it locked up my system forcing a hard restart. This is a joke! Doesn't anyone at Seagate own a Mac where they can see that these drives are incompatible!
I'll save you a little time - I have an older "Seagate for Mac" with the firewire dock. When using one of these drives with the firewire dock it works flawlessly. THE PROBLEM IS WITH YOUR USB 3.0 DOCK.
Lastly, please don'tr direct me to your updated diagnostics link or macinstaller. I've spent 2 month getting the same poor advice from you. I've used all the latest updated ones. It just doesn't work
04-14-2012 01:02 PM
Adsy -
Thanks so so much! I can't tell you how many hours I have wasted, and I wish I had seen this before I returned my 3TB to Costco yesterday. This seems to be the solution. Seagate, please spare your Mac users headaches by making these drives Mac compatible out of the box.
04-14-2012 01:05 PM
Thanks, but this fix didn't work for me. I took Adsy's advice and deleted the Seagate files. Working like a charm so far.
05-19-2012 04:58 AM
Hi all,
It really is time Seagate stepped in and fixed this problem. At the moment, the GoFlex Desk drives are NOT Mac compatible. The link to a possible fix, which appears earlier in this thread is not working either.
I started to delete the files as advised in an earlier posting, but due to the number of files involved and their locations, I gave up after deleting just the following:
com.seagate.driver.PowSecDriverCore.pkg.bom
com.seagate.driver.PowSecDriverCore.pkg.plist
Seagate Storage Driver.kext
The good news is that this has solved the problem, I didn't even need to restart the computer. The capacity indicator lights now don't work and although that isn't satisfactory, I can at least do backups. I suspect it is only necessary to delete the last one of those 3 files - maybe someone can try that and confirm.
The drive has now been working fine for 2 days. I have successfully backed up the computer (MacBook Pro) using Time Machine and copied large volumes of files to the drive using Finder. Previously, the drive never lasted longer than about an hour before freezing, and I never managed to complete a backup, even in several tries.
SEAGATE - please respond to this posting and let us know when a fix will be available. Also, would it be possible for you to release a notice to your dealers, telling them that these drives are not currently Mac compatible. This will avoid customers wasting their time and money and will save you having to deal with the resulting complaints. I can't tell you how much time and frustration this has cost me. It is also annoying that your support people don't seem to be aware of the problem. I was told to return the drive, which I did and was provided with a new one. Needless to say, this one has the same fault. I believe (as stated above) that the problem lies with the Seagate USB 2/3 driver, there is no problem with the actual drive hardware.
Kind regards to all.

The "find a file" program was awesome! After spending all day deleting everything that was created on my Mac during the exact time that I knew I installed the hard drive, I can finally see the hard drive on it again! Way to go fellow Mac'ers!

I have been so frustrated with my seagate goflex usb 3.0 drives. I bought 2 when I invested so that I would have a backup all the time. I have over 2 tb of media that I do not want to lose. I couldn't copy one to the other without it just stopping after some random period. I finally started to wonder about the compatibility of the usb 3.0. I did some searching and finally found the usb 2.0/firewire adapter on Amazon and since I have been using that everything seem to work like a champ. I have another usb 3.0 drive from western digital and have not had trouble with it but don't use it for the same purposes.
07-08-2012 07:21 AM
I have a mac also and I can't even gain access to the external harddrive (goflex home, 2TB), I have an issue with it showing up on my disk utility, but when I try to verify it, it says there is something wrong with it and it needs repair, so when I try to repair the disk, it just sits there ... I even let it go for 48 hours and when I got back on, it just said 2 minutes until finished the whole time...I don't know what else to do. Any advice would be helpful
07-12-2012 07:22 AM
I just bought the GoFlex 3TB external hard drive from Costco like a lot of people for my Mac. Of course, like everyone, I started having all the freezing issues discussd. I've followed all the instructions on re-formatting the drive and am now trying to copy all the files. You state you bought a usb 2.0/firewire adapter on Amazon. I want to buy one too but I'm a bit of a newby and am not sure which one to buy and don't want to make another mistake.
They have a
Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk Desktop Adapter - USB 3.0 STAE106 for $17.95
Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk Desktop Adapter - Firewire 800/USB 2.0 STAE105 for $74.99
Which one should I buy for my Mac?
07-18-2012 08:37 AM
Running Mac OS 10.6.8
TIme machine stop working during initial backup. The above link directs me to an dead webpage with an internal server error.
I downloaded a software update that was suppossed to shut off the sleep function of this hard drive, however i still get the same problem.
Ive spent all morning trying to fix this problem, and have had no solution. So will be returning drive to store, and will never by a seagate product again.
08-10-2012 03:03 PM
Is there a fix for the drives not being recognized without unplugging or randomly saying they need to be reformatted on Windows 7? It appears connected to USB 3.0.

I'm just another victim... I bought the 3Terabyte Go Flex Desk drive, had it working like a charm connected to a Sony Vaio and the minute I moved it to the iMac the horror show began.
After wasting almost 2 weeks believeing that the problem was Mac related, I realise now it's Seagate related. And judging from this thread and its span in time, no solution from Seagate is to be expected.
So... goodbye Seagate, it hasn't been a pleasure.
Oh, and I'm releasing my inner Liza Minelli too... "Start spreading the news..."

My Seagate 2TB Goflex was fine until I bought a new Seagate 1TB Goflex Free Agent and installed the driver, now my 2TB ejects itself every 10 minutes. I deleted all seagate files in my mac, swapped the USB cable, uninstalled the driver... still no luck, the disc still ejects.
SEAGATE, theres a lot of posts about this going back to 2007, this is really annoying.
10-02-2012 09:38 PM
Does anyone know if deleting the Seagate drivers removes the data stored already on the external hard drive? I don't have any other way to back up my drive, but I'm tired of having to force shut down my computer because of it hanging up when my computer moniter dims. Also, will deleting the drivers affect being able to sync with Time Machine backups? Thank you ![]()

AAARGH ! This is so frustrating!
Seagate seems to have posted a link to a patch to fix the problem, and the URL is dead! Seriously, why create a fix for your products and then kill your own link to it?
I tried to find new firmware, but Seagate--just to !$@%^ with people, I guess--hides its drivers and firmware upgrades. Every other hardware company on the planet lets you download upgrades pretty easily--just select your product and go. But Seagate? No, first you have to enter your serial number (by reading microscopic print), then a part number (same microscopic print--with no differentiation between the number 0 or the letter O), then some of the most inscrutable capchas I've EVER seen. No luck.
I'm having the same problem with dumbass engineering as everyone else here: Seagate decided to make its drive "go to sleep" without any way to awaken it...I've been waiting an hour for my Goflex to mount, with no luck. This is clearly a problem (Amazon's reviews and Seagate's forums are chock full of complaints about this awful, awful issue), but no help from Seagate.
If you're going to create such a ridiculous flaw in your own hardware ("Hey, how about we make the drive go to sleep, and then never, ever wake up because our drive doesn't work right with Macs! And then let's speciically market it as a drive for Macs!"), your patch ought to be IMMEDIATE and right there at the front of your product page. I've wasted hours scouring the net, your forums, and even calling tech support (whose helpful advice was to use a USB instead of Firewire--which not only doesn't work, but seems to be a Seagate confession of epic design failure).
WHER is the patch? Post a link, Seagate, and then KEEP it the #$^! there where people can find it!
11-06-2012 06:47 AM
Thank you for letting me know that the link I posted earlier this year no longer works. Please note that we updated our Seagate site and so some of the links posted here may no longer work.
I've updated the post:

I installed my 3TB Seagate external USB 3.0 and had all the same issues that have been described in this forum (improperly ejected, Finder issues..), anyway, for me I did install the updated drivers provided here:
and all my issues have gone away. This is on the refreshed 2012 Mac Mini 2.6 Ghz Quad Core i7.
I hear the drive spinning up and down a fair amount, but not sure that's an issue. I had all my video files from itunes pointed at this drive so playing them from my Apple TV Remotely wasn't working due to the sleep issues. SO far (24 hours of use) and not 1 issue/error since the update. My front indicator light on the Seagate drive works also ![]()
Just wanted to at least let someone know that as of today 11/17/2012 things are happy with my Seagate drive on my new Mac Mini.
11-25-2012 09:31 PM
I've had a horrendous time with these drives over the past few weeks. I currently own 5 of them.
4 bought from Costco and 1 from Best buy.
I'm upgrading from multiple 1.5TB drives to these 3TB Drives
Model: 9ZQ2P6-500 3TB
Model: 1DXAP3-500 3TB
My original intention was to have two 3TB raid-1 partitions so that my media/pictures could all be backed up.
Since I've installed these mac's, I've had to hard-reset my mac-mini at least twice daily.
I've tried every hint and suggestion (except uninstall), upgraded every driver and it still didn't solve the problem. The problem occurs on multiple Mac's running Mountain Lion.
Finder Locks up after a large amount of file transfers, in addition, I utilize rsync after ssh'ing in to move files from one partition to another before ejecting the source.
OS: Mountain Lion: 10.8.2
Just tonight, I completey uninstalled the seagate software and will see if that solves my problems.
Notes: Seagate.com hates Chrome. I couldn't find anything until I switched to firefox
Notes: The documentation for the MAC Sucks.
Notes: The documentation for the new driver Sucks.
Notes: Seagate needs an uninstall button
Notes: The packaging around the drive was very nice ![]()

Read This! If you want Help!
For all those people ready to throw this drive in the bin I can understand! There are a number of issues here and it can all be very confusing getting what should be something simple to work.
I have always liked a challenge but this has turned into a grind. However I have solved all the probelms I was experiencing and want to pass on what I found. It may help some people.
I had a Seagate 2TB USB 3.0 goflex desktop connected to my PC (Asus G73SW running Win 7). In addition I had a Seagate 2TB NAS connected via my modem/router. I used the goflex desk for storage (mainly itunes files) and the NAS for backup of these files via Synctoy (awesome programme FYI) and also be able to access files anywhere from the internet. Both worked flawlessly.
I then bought a Mini Mac late 2012 model and wanted to use the 2TB goflex desk for that for primary storage and migrate my iTunes. Rather than buying another harddrive and spending more $$$'s. I kept the NAS as is on the PC but thought I can acess this from the mini-mac.
My minim-mac found my NAS straight away, but going to system preferences - sharing. And I could drag and drop files both what which was cool and no hassel!
I did a reformat of the go flex desk drive on my PC using disk managment prior to connecting to my mini-mac. Step on how to do are here http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Create
When connecting to my mini-mac for first time afterwards I ran into nearly all the issues people have raised here. Not mounting, no write access, disconnections, no indicator lights, sleep issues etc.
After trying allthe various fixes listed here (Seagate's and User's) I determined the biggest issue is understanding what is actually happening with your system. You may have all or only some items happening.
First see how the drive is currently working. Only do one thing at time. Dont have multiple programs open when doing this or be reading or writing from the disk (e.g. background programs)
Prior to just jumping into installing fixes or deleting files, record write down what is happening at specific times/actions. Once you have a clear picture of what is happening it became much clearer and I realised I had probably wasted lots of time trying things or reformatting unnecessarily.
PC / MAC inter-useability
If you want the ability to move the drive from MAC to PC and vice versa, I installed the NTFS paragon file. Previous posts said this is a issue but read on!
1. FIrst see if you can drag and drop a file from the Goflex desk. If you have formatted on a PC prior it, you should not be able to
2. Download NTFS Paragon file http://www.seagate.com/au/en/support/external-hard
3. Double click on the Paragon file and run the Mac Installer.dmg file as per http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/21
5. If Time machine prompt comes up select "no"
8. Complete installation wizard
9. Reboot
10. Activate software if promted (note this did not come up for me)
11. Reboot again
12. Check if can drag / drop files. If it goes well you should be able to do this both ways between PC and Mac now.
13. You should also see under the Mac system preferences a NTFS paragon symbol down on the bottom row.
14. And on the desktop you should have a Orange shortcut (usb symbol and name of the seagate drive) , if clicked on it goes to the drive.
See how the drive operates for a bit before jumping ahead, Test it for a day or two. The indicator lights probably won't be working and If you find it disconnects or times out etc like I did when moving a large number of files or adding a lot to itunes. As per other posters recommendations I did this:
15. Plug back into the PC and using the Seagate dashboard settings an select "never sleep" for the drive settings.
16. Right click my computer - properties. You should see a list of devices come up with include USB root drives. Double click first one and got to power management tab. Select option "allow computer to turn off drive"
17 Now test to see if drive turns off when PC shuts down
18. Disconnect and plug into mini mac (when turned off)
19. Start up mini-mac see if it mounts (it should as the NTFS is installed) and can access files/folders etc.
20. Go back into preferences - energy savings. Set computer sleep functions to your liking or just manually put computer to sleep Cmd C (I think)
21. See if computer sleeps and feeling the base of the Go-flex unit see if drive sleeps (give it a min or two).
22. If the goflex does sleep, then wake up computer and see if drive also wakes up and is still mounted (try acessing a file).
23. Also do this for shutdown and record the results. Sleep and shutdown may not show the same results!
If it does not sleep or it has unmounted (like i found) do this:
24. Now download Software.mpkg.zip from http://www.seagate.com/support/external-hard-drive
25. Follow install options
26. Do retests 19 - 23 again.
If problems persist purge all Seagate related software by these steps.
27. Download the "find any file" program (google it)
28 Open "find any file" application / program follow instructions here http://forums.seagate.com/t5/GoFlex-GoFlex-Desk-Go
29. Search "Seagate" and trash all files found
30. Empty Trash
31. Eject and unplug USB
32. Reboot Mac
33. Plug UBS back in.
I thinks these steps do play an important part and will probably be necessary. I did this and found that the seagate drive "orange" desktop short cut and NTFS under system preferences were still there and usable. It also never impacted my NAS. So I can only assume it delete other stuff "behind the scenes" like kenell files and so forth that other people have noted.
From this repeat steps 19 - 23 and see how you go, I found that after this the drive would sleep when mac slept, yet would not turn off when mac shut down. To date I have not been able to solve this only work around it by:
I really hope this information helps someone. After seeing how much effort everyone online has provided the least I could do is pass it back to similar frustrated people like me. I don't expect this will fix all the issues people are having, and yes if you can return the product probably best do so, and if your thinking of buying then do your research.
As a back up plan if i could not get a PC/MAC setup working i was going to do a Pure Mac set-up. Below I provide the info for this that I found. NOTE: This is only for late model macs with USB 3.0. There are know issues with the backward compatability of Seagates USB 3.0 to USB 2.0 and Seagate admits this. Currently there is no fix to this that I know of
All the best with it

Pure Mac Setup
Follow the steps for a Mac OS X format here http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/20
The drive will need to be reformatted. Reformatting the drive will erase all data on the drive, so you should copy any data that is on the drive to a different drive before formatting.
To reformat the drive in MacOS X:
Open Disk Utility.
Choose Go in the Finder Apple menu (at the top of the screen).
Select Utilities.
Double-click the Disk Utility icon.
Choose the Seagate drive in the left window. If the drive is not showing, see step 3 below.
Choose the Partition tab in the right side of the Disk Utility window.
In the drop-down menu that says "current volume scheme", select one partition.
Press the Options button and select Guid Partition Table.
Change the Volume Format to MacOS Extended.
Click Apply.
Warning: This operation will erase all data on the drive, so before you continue, verify that any data on the drive is backed up somewhere else.
Click Partition. At this point, the volume dismounts from the desktop and the drive is partitioned and formatted.
Note: When Volumes are created, Time Machine may open, asking if you would like to use the volume for backups. Click Cancel to proceed.
If the partition fails on Leopard, see the special instructions below, in step 3.
The drive may go to sleep on its own. If it does, you can download a utility to prevent the drive from the link below. Keep in mind the drive will still be controlled by the MacOS power management features, which are set in Mac System Preferences.
Warning: Connect your FreeAgent drive to your Mac and wait for it to mount on the desktop before using the following utility.
Download the FreeAgent Go sleep disable utility's enclosed DMG file to your desktop.
Make sure the FreeAgent drive is connected to the Mac and mounted on the desktop.
Double-click the file to start the install process.
Follow the onscreen instructions to install.
During the install, the utility performs the sleep disable function, so no further steps are needed once the installation completes.
Note: If the drive is put on a Windows computer and the sleep time is adjusted with Seagate Manager, then this utility can be installed again on the Mac to disable the sleep function.
Make sure your computer can run your drive off a single USB cable. Some older Macintosh laptops do not provide enough USB power to run an external 2.5-inch drive and so the drive will not be detected at all in that case. If you encounter problems with this, there are a few options.
If this is a newly purchased drive, you may want to work with the place of purchase to exchange this drive for a FreeAgent Go for Mac, which runs on Firewire.
A special Y-Cable can be used to plug into two USB ports to draw additional power, if two ports are available. These cables can be purchased through many popular online retails and should have 1 - Mini USB B port (male) and 2 - USB A ports (male).
Use a powered USB hub which plugs into an electrical outlet and should provide enough power to run the drive.
