Hey everyone,
I am in need of some help. I purchased a 1 TB external. It was working fine for a few weeks, I dont keep it plugged into the laptop 24/7.
Well I decided to plug it in today and its not working at all. I hear a Beep and then it just starts clicking and then the light goes out on top. I'm not really sure what happened to it.
I go into the device manager and it says "Needs troubleshooting" so I do the automatic troublehsoot and then it tries to install the driver and it comes back with "Failed to install"
So I unplug it and plug it back in and go back and it says "Failed to start"
Can anyone tell me whats going on please? ![]()

I too am having the same problem starting today. (I fear it may be that I dropped it on the floor, but only about a foot.) Anyway I plugged it in and it made weird noises and a window popped up that said something along the lines of 'your device was shut down improperly and needs to be reformatted.' Unfortunately I was in a big hurry at the time and had already clicked on close before I had really read the window. I tried to open the device which at this point would not even light up and caused my computer to freeze. Ever since it still makes beeping sounds when I plug it in, but I get the same troubleshooting window you described.
Anyway, I hoped by outlining the details of my problem it might help both of us find a solution.

I had the same problem as well and I didn't drop mine. I had it for two days, managed to transfer two files and then it stopped working. It either doesn't work at all or it comes up with a screen saying the drive needs to be formatted. When I try to format it though it says the format cannot be completed. I tried using those seagate tools things that test your drive but it wouldn't test it.
I really need help with this. I urgently need a working hard drive.

Try using DISKPART to see if the drive can be formatted. I would like to point out, however, that DISKPART should be used with caution since using the wrong drive number can lead to data loss.
That being said, here are the instructions:
Note: Please ensure all other hard drives /thumb drives/memory sticks or any other recording media have been removed from your PC. This process will delete all data on the drive, so be sure only the boot drive and the external drive are connected.
- For XP, click on Start > Programs > Accessories > command prompt
- For Vista/ Win 7 Start > Type Command on the Start search box
- On the results menu, right-click on Command Prompt and select Run As Administrator
At the command prompt window type Diskpart. There should be a entry that appears as
DISKPART>
Now type List Disk, this will show all the disk drives that are currently detected (eg. Disk 0 , Disk 1)
Please type Select Disk 1
Replace (1) with the corresponding number listed on the List Disk for the hard drive that you want to erase. DISK 0 is your boot drive. Please DO NOT select this disk.
Now type Clean, press Enter, then reboot the computer. ( This will delete all partition
and data on the drive) You should now be able to perform a long format on
the hard disk drive.
How To Format The Drive In Disk Management
To partition and format your external hard drive, follow these steps:
A. Click Start
B. Right-click Computer or My Computer
C. Select Manage
D. Click Disk Management
E. Select the GoFlex drive
F. Right-click the large box to the right and select Delete Volume or Delete Partition
G. Now right-click on the Unallocated area
H. Select New Simple Volume or New Partition
I. Agree with everything until you see this:
Default
NTFS
New Volume = ( name you want to provide for the drive )
J. Then put a check mark in the box Perform a quick format
K. Select Apply or Start
L. When the drive is ready for use it will say NTFS - Healthy
