Re: Circuit Board scorched!! Seagate Barracuda 2 TB XT "ST32000641AS"

That is a very new model, I can see only two options,

1 - Send it in to Seagate for repair

2 - Buy a new drive

Sending it in will probably cost more than a new one though, I'm guessing you broke it yourself rather than it failed ?

Top marks for honesty if this is the case.

Next step if you don't mind getting the solder out, take some pictures of the damage and post them up, there may be a way to replace one part yourself cheaply, and we have a man who will know if it can be done if he sees the damage.

Re: Circuit Board scorched!! Seagate Barracuda 2 TB XT "ST32000641AS"

Thx for the reply.

As soon as i'll post the pics, however, in your opinion, how much time i have to wait for to see someone sell the pcb of this hdd?

I seen also in other sites who sells just hard drive pcb, but nothing for my hdd, maybe is really too new.

Yeah, if you have microscopic eyes :womanmad: I can't see anything from those Pete, and opening them simply send the shack sign up page up.

From what I can see it looks burnt at the interface connector? far right as you look at it?

Re: Circuit Board scorched!! Seagate Barracuda 2 TB XT "ST32000641AS"

Your board has sustained an overvoltage on the +5V supply. This has resulted in a shorted 5V protection diode (TVS), and has burned out the inductors between this diode and the +5V supply pins in the SATA power connector.

What you need to do is to remove the diode with flush cutters, clean up the burnt area with a toothbrush and isospropyl alacohol, and then bridge the inductors with a short piece of wire. Unfortunately you have obscured the diodes with your "what's that?" annotation. :-(

Alternatively, if you would like to try a replacement board, then you will need to transfer the 8-pin serial flash memory chip from patient to donor. This chip stores "adaptive" data that are unique to your drive. It is the Winbond chip located at the bottom left corner of the PCB.

Vendors such as http://www.onepcbsolution.com and http://www.hdd-parts.com both offer a firmware transfer service for between US$10 and $20. Otherwise your local TV/AV repair shop should be able to do it for you.

That above is our man with his finger on the electronics side of a HDD, do what he advises and if it's gonna come to life again it will, other than that it's fried and a paperweight, good luck on whatever you decide to do with it, has to ge worth a magnifying glass and a bit of solder though imo.

Re: Circuit Board scorched!! Seagate Barracuda 2 TB XT "ST32000641AS"

Thanks at both guys.

However......

"What you need to do is to remove the diode with flush cutters"

What diode? Where's this diode? Can you circle it in the image?

"and then bridge the inductors with a short piece of wire"

What inductors? Where are these inductors? Can you circle them in the image? And then..... waht do you mean with "piece of wire"? A normal wire? If not, of what material?

"Unfortunately you have obscured the diodes with your "what's that?" annotation. :-("

Sorry, here you are: http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/8976/1000754z.jpg

"Alternatively, if you would like to try a replacement board, then you will need to transfer the 8-pin serial flash memory chip from patient to donor."

Why i need to do this transfer? What is there in the chip?

"It is the Winbond chip located at the bottom left corner of the PCB."

Sorry again, but can you circle it?

SORRY for the too questions, but i must know all this things.

Thanks.

Re: Circuit Board scorched!! Seagate Barracuda 2 TB XT "ST32000641AS"

The shorted diode is the 5V TVS diode:
http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/HDD/ST32000641AS_TVS.jpg

The inductors are the disintegrated components above pins 9,8,7:
http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/HDD/ST32000641AS_inductors_2.jpg

It may be difficult to replace them with wire links. An alternative, possibly easier method is to run a wire from the +5V pins (7,8,9) at the SATA power connector to the "V" end of the 5V TVS diode. Just FYI, the +12V supply also has inductors -- see pins 15,14,13.

The serial flash memory chip stores unique, drive specific calibration data. In the event of a board swap, these data need to be transferred to the donor. The most likely outcome of a straight board swap will be that the drive will spin up, click a few times, and fail to locate its firmware.

The flash chip is identified here:
http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/HDD/ST32000641AS_flashmem_shocksens.jpg

If you have a digital multimeter (a cheap one costs US$10), I suggest that you confirm my diagnosis by measuring the resistance of the TVS diodes on the 200 ohms scale. I would also be grateful if you could, for my own satisfaction, set your meter on the diode/continuity range and measure the resistance of the shock sensor (at the pads on the PCB), before you remove the 5V diode.

Good luck.

I thank you for all this infos but i didn't understand some things.......

PLEASE, can you make me a drawing for this procedure? Just a drawing for understand all this procedure who then i'll have to explain at the person who repairs AV and make this things too.

Another things, what happen if i don't save the serial memory flash chip? I must do this thing by force?

P.S. When i'll have the opportunity, i buy a digital multimeter :smileywink:

Re: Circuit Board scorched!! Seagate Barracuda 2 TB XT "ST32000641AS"

I hope this is clear enough:

http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/HDD/ST32000641AS-5V_link.jpg

If you replace the board, then you MUST transfer the serial flash chip, or its contents, to the donor. If you don't, then your drive will spin up and click, but it won't be recognised.

Re: Circuit Board scorched!! Seagate Barracuda 2 TB XT "ST32000641AS"

Ok, now it's more clear.

fzabkar, however, this "wire" i have to put is a normal wire? (iron)??

Another question: How i transfer the serial flash chip??

Re: Circuit Board scorched!! Seagate Barracuda 2 TB XT "ST32000641AS"

Use an insulated copper wire. Bare the ends, and solder them to the connection points.

Transferring the serial flash memory chip requires either a programmer device, or physical transfer by desoldering the chip. Your local TV/AV repair shop should be able to do it for you. Otherwise the supplier of your replacement board may offer a cheap (~US$10) ROM transfer service.

Hopefully the link wire will be all you need to do, after removing the shorted diode.

Good luck.

Thanks, now i know what i have to do to my av repair. :smileywink:

"solder them to the connection points."

Sorry for the question, but a what connection points? Those "15, 14, 13"   or   "9, 8, 7"?

As in your images here:

http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/HDD/ST32000641AS_inductors_2.jpg

http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/HDD/ST32000641AS-5V_link.jpg

"Transferring the serial flash memory chip requires either a programmer device"

Can i buy this programmer device? What's its name? Can i to do this thing or can do it just personnel specified?

"after removing the shorted diode"

I removed the diode. :smileywink:

Re: Circuit Board scorched!! Seagate Barracuda 2 TB XT "ST32000641AS"

Yes, run a wire to 9, 8,7.

I only referred to the other pins to illustrate what the inductors would have looked like before they were burnt.

The programmer would be expensive.

Re: Circuit Board scorched!! Seagate Barracuda 2 TB XT "ST32000641AS"

Ok i'll run a wire to 9, 8 and 7 pins.

However look this image, i removed the diode but i made a lil scratch on the pcb, problems with it?

http://img706.imageshack.us/i/95464807.jpg/

Then........Is this the 5v?

http://img211.imageshack.us/i/52794664.jpg/

Then have other questions:

I have to do the welding like that, ie with a unique wire which then splits into three:

http://img406.imageshack.us/i/not3.jpg/

Or 3 different wires: ??

http://img156.imageshack.us/i/15139539.jpg/

These are my last dubts :smileyhappy:

Re: Circuit Board scorched!! Seagate Barracuda 2 TB XT "ST32000641AS"

The scratch doesn't appear deep enough to have severed any tracks.

You have correctly identified the +5V end of the diode.

I would use a single wire whose bared end runs along all three pins, as follows:

http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/HDD/ST32000641AS-wire.jpg

I would also suggest that you clean up the charred (carbonised) area with a toothbrush and isopropyl alcohol.

Ok, thanks, now i've finally all ideas clear.

I made it, but this is the max i could make :-(

I'll let you know how it will end.

Re: Circuit Board scorched!! Seagate Barracuda 2 TB XT "ST32000641AS"

hi again at all.

I haven't used any methods.

My TV/A repair shop repaired my HDD rebuilding completely the scorched area, completely rebuilded the scorched condensers.

No need photos, cuz now the PCB is pratically like new.

Now the HDD works!

Thanks at ALL for the patience and for the help.

Thanks.

Re: Circuit Board scorched!! Seagate Barracuda 2 TB XT "ST32000641AS"

Thanks fzabkar, for all the information you supplied PeterSEA.

I had suffered the same fate... Power surge caused PSU to fry 4 2TB drives in a 6 drive RAID 10 array {where 2 in the same strip :smileysad: }

Following your instructions I manage to get one of the 2 drives repaired for a faction of the $900-$1200 the recovery guys wanted (in fact it cost me two pizza's, since the guy did not want to charge me for such a 'simple' repair).

FYI, I have since fully repaired the array, and started with backups.. Due to the excellent support information like this, Seagate is now my prefered drive supplier. With 6x 2TB drives purchases in the last two weeks.

Please keep up the GREAT work.
