Netgear ReadyNAS Pro Pioneer Edition with 3 x ST31000528AS seems to be running slow

My Raid box seems to be responding slowly to requests at times, would a firmware update help?

 

I have a ReadyNAS Pro Pioneer Edition populated with 3 ST31000528AS discs all with CC38 firmware, is there a way to update the firmware on these drives and what is the benefit as I cannot find any additional details about the firmware!

 

As my raid is set to X-Raid 2 I can remove a single disk, add it to a windows 7 box, update it and replace it where it will rebuild the array but what is the value in this?
