Model - ST3500320AS Complicated Issues

[ Edited ]

My 500 GB ST3500320AS  Firmware SD15     S/N  [Edited: Removed personal information per the community rules and regulations.]  Date Code   09027 Harddrive crashed on me 2 years ago now I believe.

Basically the harddrive shows up in bios as a 500GB Harddrive it will attempt to boot to it's windows vista sometimes but will freeze on the windows logo and in safemode ChkDisk.sys and never load anything.

If I attach the harddrive as a 2ndary drive to a working system when the computer is shutoff and then start it, it will never load same thing it wont get past windows logo and if I attach the harddrive when its already running it won't show up in device manager or Computer Management etc MOST OF THE TIME, every now and then it will pop up and say the harddrive needs formatted however it doesn't stay showing long enough for you to even acknoledge that or see it in device manager or Computer managment.

What do you think is wrong with it and what steps should I take to fix it if even possible.

Also note there are no mechanical sounds or any reason to believe it has mechanically failed.  Unfortunately there are alot of family pictures and data that needs to be saved on here so I'd like to know where I'm at. Do you think this is possibly a case of the BUSY drive because it really doesn't seem like it to me but I'd honestly hope that it is because atleast I could fix that with the Com Port...

Thanks in advance for the replies

Anyone able to give me any insite on this, Im going to pickup a  RS232 Serial to TTL so if it is the firmware bug I can just patch it but if it's not, that'd be good to know.

It would also be good to test the drive with our SeaTools for DOS utility:

Give a hoot. Backup your data on a second storage media.

Re: Model - ST3500320AS Complicated Issues

IMHO your only DIY hope is to clone your drive sector-by-sector using a tool (eg ddrescue) that knows how to work around bad sectors, and then use data recovery software on the clone.

Ddrescue can perform multipass cloning. It clones the easy sectors on the first pass, and attempts the more difficult ones on subsequent passes. It can also clone your drive in reverse, thereby disabling lookahead caching. It keeps a log, allowing it to resume after an interruption.
