I can't seem to find the Backup plus interface adapters for sale anywhere. Not even on the Seagate site.
Do they exist yet? Can I order one? Does any retail store carry them?
If they don't exist yet, when do they come out?
I'm excited about Backup plus as a Mac user and video editor. Want to buy one and get a Firewire 800 adapter ASAP and when I upgrade my machine, I'll want Thunderbolt.
07-03-2012 05:53 AM
Just to clarify, I'm looking at portables rather than desktop at the moment, and am interested in availability of both
07-03-2012 01:43 PM
Good news and bad news.
My understanding is that separate adapters will not be available until later this summer hopefully. Not right now. So, sorry about that.
The good news is that GoFlex adapters do fit Backup Plus drives, so perhaps one of those could be a stand-in until then? It shouldn't have much performance difference. It won't look exactly the same as the Backup Plus adapters will, but the functionality will be the same.

Thanks, this really helped. I had the same question, and I was searching everywhere like a madman. However it seems a bit strange that one of the selling points is the fact that the included adapter can be upgraded to a FireWire 800 and/or Thunderbolt connector, but neither exist. Furthermore, no one thought about informing potential customers of this. I don't think it is very nice to imply that these features are available when they actually aren't yet.

I agree that it's disappointing that the new adapters aren't available, but AlanM said the old Goflex adapters work, they just don't match the appearance of the new drives perfectly.

I want to make sure I buy the right adapter...I've got a 3tb Backup Plus desktop, and would like both a thunderbolt and a firewire adapter...looking at the pictures it's hard to see how any of the adapters will fit my drive. Can someone point out which adapters are the appropriate ones? It looks like the options are:
1) Firewire: GoFlex™ Upgrade Cable — FireWire® 800 Model #STAE102
2) Firewire: GoFlex™ Desk Desktop Adapter - FireWire 800/USB 2.0 Model #STAE105
3) Firewire: GoFlex® Desk Desktop Adapter — FireWire® 800/USB 2.0 V2 Model #STAE123
1) Thunderbolt: GoFlex® Desk Thunderbolt™ Adapter Model #STAE122
2) Thunderbolt: GoFlex® Thunderbolt™ Adapter Model #STAE121
Thanks.

Yes, all of the adapters for GoFlex Desk will fit the Backup Plus Desktop drive.
The color scheme and external shell won't necessarily look the same, but they should function just fine.

Even with this information, I can't find a store or on line site, including Seagate, that seems to offer one of these. I too want to take my backup plus from USB 2.0- to firewire.
Can you point me to a site that has inventory?
Thanks

Yes, you are right, now that I look at the Seagate site. It appears the ones you want are on back order.

Alan - not trying to shoot the messenger, but I'm perplexed.
Looking to buy from Costco the Backup Plus 3TB (STCA3000600) [$139.99] - but it only comes with USB 3.0 connector - and my MacBook Pro only has USB 2.0 / FireWire 400 & FireWire 800 peripheral connections.
But here's what is confusing - Seagate sells a Backup Plus 3TB (STCB3000100) [$169.30] that DOES come with FireWire 800 (and USB 2.0) adaptors - so Seagate DOES make a FireWire 800 adaptor for Backup Plus. But from what I've seen on this string - Seagate does NOT sell Backup Plus FireWire 800 adaptors / connectors separately - and only suggests using GoFlex adaptors / connectors? That really doesn't evoke confidence in the product management. Just saying.
are the ports / connector configurations on the STCA300600 different from the configurations on the STCB300100 ? Or put another way - would the FireWire 800 connector being sold for the STCA3000600 NOT work on the STCB300100 ?
Thanks much.

I can certainly understand your sentiment.
No, the ports are not different if they're both 3.5-inch desktop drives.

OK, so take a look at STAE121 (Thunderbolt) here.
"Connect to your Backup Plus portable drive and Thunderbolt cable for interface speeds up to 20x faster than USB 2.0."
And STAE102 is FW800
"Compatible with any portable Backup Plus or GoFlex drive"
10-22-2012 12:42 PM
Are you guys going to be offering adapters that are more aligned with the look/colors of the Backup Plus portable drive? I just saw the STAE128 at Best Buy, and it looks like like the GoFlex adapter.

10-26-2012 12:00 AM
It'd be great if Seagate could sell a NAS adaptor base for these drives, by the way.
11-12-2012 03:00 PM
hi, alan, based on your recommendation i purchased the STAE102. but i have discovered it does not work with my Backup Plus desktop drive. the adapter lights up when connected but, possibly because there is no power connection, the drive does not activate at all, nor does my computer acknowledge that it is attached.
any ideas on something i can do to remedy this? or have i just lost my money on this deal?
thanks
11-13-2012 07:23 AM
Sorry to hear that.
If the drive works fine with the other base, I'd say your base was defective or something. Sorry about that. I'd get back with the seller and get a replacement.
11-17-2012 12:34 PM
for those of you following this thread in search of a solution, i want to let you kow that alan is mistaken (sorry, alan) and my adapter is not malfunctioning.
the issue is that the recommened adapter does not have a power source to make the drive work. i *finally* found someone else who, after spending 1.5 hours on the phone with a tech from seagate, got the link to the correct adapter. i am ordering it now, and will repost, letting you know whether (finbgers crossed) it ends up working with this drive.
cheers

I am sorry I wasn't able to help you out.
I'm glad it works though.

it works!!! anyone who has been searching for a firewire adapter for their desktop backup plus drive, this is the one you need:
Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk Desktop Adapter - Firewire 800/USB 2.0 STAE105
i bought it at amazon for $60. enjoy!
11-28-2012 02:23 PM
I just purchased one of the newer Backup Plus 3TB drives with the newer USB 3.0 micro B connector which does not appear to be compatible with the GoFlex adapters I am seeing on line. Is there any update about an adapter for the newer drives?
11-29-2012 07:23 AM
The 3TB model is a desktop/3.5-inch drive. The cable modules for that kind of drive aren't intercompatible with GoFlex or Backup Plus portable/2.5-inch drives.
But they should be intercompatible with GoFlex or Backup Plus desktop/3.5-inch drives.
Are you certain you're comparing the same sizes?
Please forgive me if you are; I just wanted to propose the most obvious solution first.
11-30-2012 09:44 AM
AlanM - you said in this thread on 07 March 2012 that:
"My understanding is that separate adapters will not be available until later this summer hopefully".
It is now 30 Nov 2012 and I can still not find the adapter clearly advertised both ON THE BOX of my Backup Plus 1TB 2.5-inch external drive and the Seagate Website [http://www.seagate.com/gb/en/external-hard-drives/
"USB 3.0 plug and play
It is easy to upgrade to Thunderbolt™ technology or FireWire® 800 with add-on adapters (sold separately)."
So, please tell me where I can buy the Firewire 800 to USB3 cable I need to make my drive USB 3.0 plug and play with Firewire 800?
Many thanks.
PS - By the way, all the various links given to adapters in this thread DO NOT work for the Backup Plus, which has a USB3 socket. How hard can this really be?????
11-30-2012 04:08 PM - edited 11-30-2012 04:10 PM
I too am looking for a USB3.0 microB to FW800 adapter.
When will these be available? I just bought several of the backup plus portable drives and am about to return them if there is no adapter available NOW.
Might as well just buy a drive that has the FW port already installed, especially if I have to buy what appears to be a $30 adapter. I should have done my research first.
12-01-2012 12:13 PM
I'm in agreement with the previous two posts. I have an older 21" iMac which doesn't have USB 3.0 input, but it does have Firewire 800 inputs. So I purchased the Backup Plus for Mac USB 3.0 (3TB) specifically because Seagate advertises that a Firewire 800 connector (sold seperately) is available. It's on your website and on the box, but yet no solution seems to be available (where the advertised connector?). I was so anxious to figure out a way to make this work that, based on other comments in this thread, I took the chance and purchased:
Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk Desktop Adapter - Firewire 800/USB 2.0 STAE105
That's doesn't work either. So please provide the easy answer that many of us are asking for. I'd rather keep my purchase, but will send these Seagate products back to Amazon and post my experience in the comments. This runaround is ridiculous.
12-02-2012 06:33 AM
Problem Solved:Thaks to an Amazon poster, I was able to discover that the FreeAgent GoFlex Desktop Adapter (STAE 105) does work as a Firewire 800 converter for the Backup Plus USB 3.0. The trick is to remove the plate on the bottom of the Backup Plus. The desktop harddrive then fits onto the adapter, which has a Firewire 800 connector. It is nfuriating that it took me hours to discover that simple piece of information. Perhaps putting that in your instructions, description or, at the very least, having handy for the support admin to share would have been nice.
Now on to fire this baby up...fingers crossed that all that extra effort was worth it.

DuncanS
I will have someone contact you about this issue, from Seagate Support.
I apologise for the inconvenience.

Ok have bought Backup Plus 2.0 TB desktop drive #STCA2000100 back in August 2012.
Of course I, as many were, was excited about the Thunderbolt capability but had to wait
until December 2012 to be able to get it and I'm still confused.
The software was so cumbersome to try to partition a Mac and PC drive capability (another feature I was
keen on using) that I had to delete it and just use it on a Mac for my video editing storage.
Q. Do I need to reinstall software to get desktop Seagate Backup Plus to work with Thunderbolt Adapter?
I bought the STAE128 Thunderbolt Adapter for Backup Plus Portable Drive.
Q. 2 Is this going to work with my desktop model?
Q3. Do I have to remove the bottom of the desktop model to access any ports or get another cord to daisy chain?
As was suggested by another forum member in this thread?
Or do I return it to store and try to buy the one that works before I open the box?
I bought the 2m Thunderbolt cables.
I understand how fast technology changes but really Seagate to sell a product clearly specifying on package
that it will work faster with adapters then not have them readily available for sale for 6 months and not have them
even work plug and play with the variety of drives you sell.
It's maddening!
I think the forum support is a bit murky as well. For some geeky people they probably could dig up info but
your generaly consumer has a lot less knowledge of how to surf for information and getting a real life person
to talk to me online about a simple matter of what to buy was frustrating beyond belief. I had to guess and I'm still not sure.
There should be a website PAGE devoted to this topic on the Seagate Backup Plus drive area where consumers buy them.
The developers of this product just thought what the heck let's figure it out later is my take on this.
That's so unfair to the consumer when we have oodles of choices in external hard drives on market to choose from.
And the Thunderbolt/Firewire 800 capability did give these drives an edge at the time they were released.
But it doesn't give consumers who bought it then had to wait to play catchup on technology 6 more months much confidence in how seagate has respect for its users.
BTW I am a Seagate customer.
I did buy a seagate harddrive several years ago to replace the crud Toshiba drive installed in my Dell and it has
worked flawlessly where the Toshiba died 6 months in and Dell refused to honor warranty kept telling me to reinstall
my OS. Whatever! For the money I spent out of pocket it works well and that's all I need. No hassles!

G'day JimSaal, following your success I went out and bought an stae105 and got it for $A35 and I made the happy discovery that it seems that it will also connect to my many smaller naked sata drives which I have laying around from past computers.
But I digress ..... I am in the exact same circumstances as you found yourself so would you kindly tell me how you safely remove the bottom plate from the 3T Backup Plus desktop? I looked but can't find the Amazon ref you alluded to.
Cheers in advance............
01-03-2013 02:24 AM
OK, I'm suitably embarassed .......... it just pulls off!!
it's just a bit stiff and wobbly the first time ......... but is working and recognising.
So for anyone needing firewire, get yourself a FreeAgent GoFlex Desk Firewire 800.
01-03-2013 08:54 AM
If you want the Thunderbolt to work with Windows, you need this driver.
Q. 2 Is this going to work with my desktop model?
No, the Portable adapter will not work with the desktop model.
Q3. Do I have to remove the bottom of the desktop model to access any ports or get another cord to daisy chain?
The other user answered. Thank you! It just pulls off.
But the only port under there is the "USM" port, which is like the Serial ATA cable interface.
There should be a website PAGE devoted to this topic on the Seagate Backup Plus drive area where consumers buy them.
We tried to do so here and other similar pages.

I am in the same position as DuncanS. I purchased a STBU 1000301 1TB Backup Plus portable drive, which is advertised on the Seagate website and on the packaging as compatible with firewire 800, via adaptors that are sold separately. This was the only reason for purchasing this product. I have a mac with a firewire 800 port. It is for video storage and I wanted the faster transfer speed. I am having to use the usb2.0 connection supplied and as such could have bought a much cheaper drive.
As per all the previous posters: where is the adaptor sold? Is it correct that the adaptor that is available for the desktop version does not fit the base of this unit?

I recently purchased a:
3.5" 4TB Backup Plus Desk
STCA4000600
S/N: [ Edited to comply with forum guidelines ]
PN: 1DXAY6-570
Costco Item # 695080
This drive shipped with the USB 3.0 Adapter.
I don't have a USB 3.0 Port on my Late 2011 17 inch MacBook Pro, but I do have a Firewire 800 Port so I purchased this:
Firewire 800/USB 2.0 Adapter
STAE123
PN: 9ZH9PR-RA1 (on the box, 9ZH9PR-RAA on the actual Adapter)
S/N: [ Edited to comply with forum guidelines ] DOM: 12/2012
But this adapter is giving me all kinds of fits. It routinely hangs on file copy and this appears (stress appears) to get worse as the drive gets hot. I also get anemic performance. Copying 500MB files yields throughput of about 22-24 MB/s which is quite slow compared what others have claimed and I have a number of 7200RPM drives in Firewire enclosures on which I consistently see 40-50 MB/s (or more). On a couple of occasions this Firewire Adapter has completely frozen my machine requiring a reset.
I will add that the USB 3.0 Adapter appears to work fine on my USB 2.0 port albeit providing performance of about 20-22 MB/s on writes.
I want to start with the simple question. Did I buy the right Firewire 800 Adapter to use with this GoFlex drive?
Any useful input would be welcome.

It appears you are in Australia, based on the product number STBU 1000301. I'm in the U.S., I bought a Seagate 1TB BackUpPlus for Mac--the US version is STBU 1000100, and a comparison of their respective data sheets indicates they seem to be the same thing. I bought a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex "upgrade cable"--STAE102. After puzzling over this for some time, I read Jim Saal's comment on 12-02-2012 06:33 AM for the 3 TB version and pulling off the bottom plate. I also read ttgyir's 01-03-2013 02:24 AM comment about just pulling the bottom off. I looked at my STBU 1000100 and noticed that the back end (where the USB 3.0 connector is) had what appeared to be a line about 7/16" (11 mm) toward the front. This is the area where there is one slim white-ish plastic insert which apparently is the "on" light. I figured if Mr. Saal and ttgir had a 3 TB on which the bottom came off, maybe the 1 TB pulled off from the back. I pulled and the back end came off and there is another connecting port into which the STAE102's non-firewire end plugs in perfectly. So my STBU 1000100 is now up and running. Perhaps this will work for you.
The Seagate 1 TB BackUpPlus for Mac was purchased from an AAFES retail store (US military Post or Base Exchange), and the STAE102 was purchased on-line from the Seagate Store: http://www.seagate.com/external-hard-drives/access
