Can't get FAT+ to see XP shares

New to FAT+.   I updated the firmware to 1.55 and have been using the unit just fine, including internet content and Netflix.  Howver, when i try to connect to shares on my PC, I get a 'Log On Fail' error message.

I'm running an older PC with XP Pro sp3 connected to Linksys wireless G router via an adapter.  My FAT+ is connect to the router via cat5.  I have followed all the advice here without success:

http://forums.seagate.com/t5/FreeAgent-Theater/How-to-setup-Windows-XP-shared-folders-for-FAT/td-p/4...

Questions:

I've entered the IP of my PC (as found by using 'ipconfig' from a command prompt) into the FAT+, but what should be my 'net user' and 'net password'.   I don't use a password on my PC so I assume I just use my windows login and leave the password blank.  But no luck.

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Can't get FAT+ to see XP shares

Don't know what's in FW 1.55. However, you could try these:

Create a new user on your XP SP3 PC. And make sure the new user can access the share.

1. On the FAT+, navigate to the PC using Browse->Network, and when prompted for user/password enter the info.

2. If step 1 does not work, try creating a shortcut (using My_Shortcut on the FAT+) with user/password and the PC IP address. And then accessing the PC with this shortcut.

Re: Can't get FAT+ to see XP shares

bill. first your fat should have it's own ip and not your computers

if you have dhcp enabled on your router, the router will assign an ip to your fat(might be the problem there, conflict on the network)

on the xp machine make sure you enable sharing on the drive with the movies, then you should be able to browse network to that drive, if it asks for u/p that would be windows login

Re: Can't get FAT+ to see XP shares

Bill,

Welcome to the club of seagate guinea-pigs with FW 1.55.

Since you mentioned you upgraded your FW, do you mind posting your current FW version? You can find this by pressing Menu on the remote and then select settings, then choose system and then choose version information. I am also curious if you can see your computers under Browse ---> Network option (I can not see anything other than "My Shortcuts").

I ended up defining shortcuts under "My Shortcut". But many on this forum with the same FW version (1.55) can directly browse the computers without going to "My Shortcuts", and I found that my FW version/revision is different from theirs.

You can create a shortcut as follows

select "My Shortcuts" and press ok on the remote. In the next blank screen, press "i" button on the remote and then choose "Add" button (I think you will see add/modify/delete buttons when you press "i"), it will prompt you for user id/pw/ip address. At that point, you can provide the user id, pass word and IP address of the machine you are trying to access and save the connection. If you don't have a userid/pw on the machine, you don't need to specify userid and password for that shortcut . Or if the guest account is turned on (you can verify this from control panel -> user accounts on your XP machine to see if guest account is on), you can specify "guest" as the userid with no password. Once you save the shortcut, you should be able to access the shares through that shortcut.

I think there are two versions/revisions for FW 1.55 floating around and one of them doesn't seem to handle network connections very well. My FAT+ also came with a lower version of FW and when it got upgraded to 1.55, it started having network connectivity issues. Seagate refuses to address this issue, other than shipping your device to seagate at your expense. So if you can not access your network shares through shortcut, I would recommend  you either  exchange  or return FAT+.   (or buy product from a competitor with better support).

Re: Can't get FAT+ to see XP shares

Hey All:

Thanks for the help.  Unfortunately, I'm still having issues.  I'm running FW 1.55.229221U.  I've created a new 'limited' user on my XP machine with a password.  I've double checked that I'm not getting an IP conflict between my PC and FAT+.  And I've turned sharing on for my system drive (the only one I have on my XP box right now). I still can't see the computer under 'Browse>Network' or under "Network>my_shortcuts"   I can see the shortcut I created, but it doesn't connect.

I'm running WPA personal on my wireless network with MAC filtering on.  Could that be interfering with the FAT+ ability to see my XP machine?

I love the FAT+'s ability to acess Netflix and my new drive that I bought to connect to it, so I don't want to give up.  But its frustrating not being able to access the network, especially when that's touted as one of the features of this thing.

Any other ideas?   I'm considering going the modified FW I've seen talked about here, but I shouldn't have to that!  Plus, I'm a novice at all this stuff.

Try turning off MAC filtering. I'm using WPA without problem. It should not matter, but you'd never know.. this could be a new bug.

Re: Can't get FAT+ to see XP shares

bill,

It looks like you have the same FW version as mine. I think the network connections are completely screwed up on that version of FW and I have run into my share of issues with it.

Try this - when you create the shortcut, don't specify a password, even if there is a PW for the userid on the machine. I am running into the same issue. I have documented this in another thread about my NAS connectivity issue.

For me, if I specify pw for my windows machine for a userid secured by password, it will login to my NAS instead of logging into windows, even though at the bottom of the screen, it will show the ip address and userid on the PC. But if I don't specify a userid, it will login to windows share properly, even though that account is pw secured.

If you contact seagate, they will ask you to ship the device at your expense. If I were you, and you still have issues, I would return it to the retailer for an exchange or refund as I don't have a lot of faith in seagate fixing this issue. Unfortunately I ended up wasting a lot of time with their useless support.

Seagate, are you listening? Fix this connectivity issue instead of releasing garbage firmware and wasting the time of your customers.

Re: Can't get FAT+ to see XP shares

you didn't mention if you could play a netflix movie

IF possible connect your fat to the router using a cat5 cable once and see if it works then, if it does then a setting in your wireless is messed up

you really shouldn't have to create anither user account unless you wanted ti

I have mine wired to the router and have no problems

Windows doesn't always like sharing the root drive, try sharing a folder in my documents and see if you can get to that, if that works you could use that folder or make a folder with a subfolder in c just so the share isn't the root or in the root drive.

Re: Can't get FAT+ to see XP shares

My FAT+ handles Netflix just fine and the services listed under Internet.  But no sign of my PC or its shared folders.

I'm going to try the advice you all have given me.  I'll let you know how it goes.   Also, I noticed that I had Microsoft Office Groove running on my PC.  Don't know much about it, but I believe it is a file sharing program that came with Office 2007.  I disabled it, we'll see if that had anything do to with it.

Lastly, I found an article on here as to why the FW is locked down.  It has something do with the security required by Netflix.  Here's the link:

Wish me luck!

Re: Can't get FAT+ to see XP shares

Hey All:

Good news!  I got my FAT+ to see my network.   Two things fixed it.

1) I thought I had set up a network for my PC but only created a work group.  Got that fixed but still wouldn't connect.

2) I turned off both the Windows Firewall and my McAfee firewall (which I didn't know actual existed all this time), as well as selecting 'Trust this Network' in McAfee.   I restarted the ol' PC and the FAT+ logged right in.

I also did all the the other things you all suggested, so I give credit to everyone: Thanks for all your help.

I'm getting a DockStar this week to create network storage solution.  So I may be back on here real soon.

Thanks,

Bill,

I'm glad you got the FAT+ to see the network now. Did you turn Windows Firewall back on? to see if you can get it to see your PC. If not, this is a serious bug. I would not turn off Windows Firewall for too long. It's OK to turn it off for testing purpose.

In any case, it seems the FW 1.55 has significant problem network wise. Seagate needs to address this bug before the next (perhaps the last?) FW release for the FAT+.

Re: Can't get FAT+ to see XP shares

I have set the Firewall on my PC to "Office FilePrinter Sharing" and that helps me to access the network shares. You shouldn't have to turn off the firewall entirely for access to network shares and printers.

But I think FW has too many bugs around network login, especially when you have multiple servers on the network. I have turned off the FW in the router and still I have issues with accessing my NAS shares.

Linksys routers USUALLY have a built in firewall that's pretty darn strong. I never ran Windowz, or anyone elses firewall protection as the router was good enough. Never had a problem so when I went to ATT Uverse and their router/remote gateway also had a good firewall I disabled any other firewalls again and still no problems.

Really don't think you need a software firewall if your router's firewall is strong enough.

You can test your firewall for free here:
