Maxtor Central Axis and Static IP Address or no DHCP server

Is it possible to get the MCA to work with a fixed IP address, i.e., with the DHCP server in the router turned off?  This is possible in the MIRA product.

Re: Maxtor Central Axis and Static IP Address or no DHCP server

Hi,
My Router Belkin has DHCP server off.
In my network all IP-adresses are fixed, so I did also on my MSS II 500 Gb.
It all workes perfect with Central Axis.
So the answer is absolutely: Yes.

Great. how do you assign the IP Address to the Central Axis? In my case I just bought the CNA-1TB device, so I didn't have a pre-existing device on the network.

Hi,
Do you know the actual IP-adress of your MSS ?
Did you install the software already ?
If you know the actual IP adress of your device, just put the adress in internet explorer and you can enter the web interface.
Go to Advanced Features and just set the network settings.

It might be needed to set your PC at DHCP automatic - temporary -
Remember the old settings for the gateway and fixed IP adress of your PC !!
and mark down the default DNS Server adress of your router  which is also the default DNS adress of your PC
So you can reset this afterwards

If you don't see your IP of your device
see also my message

Ask again, I'll stay online for now some time.

Re: Maxtor Central Axis and Static IP Address or no DHCP server

Thanks so much -- got it working! I turned on the DHCP server function in my Linksys router, which then gave the Central Axis device an IP. The Manager software then immediately found the device and I'm on my way. Then in all my computers (macs) I changed the TCP/IP setting from "manual" to "dhcp with manual address". It seems this is a way I can have fixed addresses for my computers, but dhcp assigned addresses for other devices like the central axis (I just bought it yesterday). I like the fixed addresses for the computers because I can then do port forwarding in the router.

Hi

I should advice to set the IP adress for your MSS II device also to fixed.
Because otherwise you can loose it at some time.
So I did.  I assume you did set the network name of your home-network in the NAS!
It is clearly possible to set all IP adresses Fixed, why let some by DHCP?
You could, ok, but why?
OK.
Happy you did succeed.

Bye Bye.

Re: Maxtor Central Axis and Static IP Address or no DHCP server

I think we may be talking about two different devices. I have the new "Central Axis network storage server, 1TB", purchased from BestBuy yesterday. The software that came with it, "Maxtor Central Axis Manager" does not allow me to set the IP address, nor does the "network settings" page from the device itself. It seems like this device will only take an IP address from a DHCP server on the network. I agree with you, I'd prefer to use a fixed address -- in fact, I may return this product because it can't take a fixed address.

Just some remarks. (Updated version)

I did found the manual for the "Maxtor Central Axis Network Storage Server 1 Tb".
I downloaded the file "MCANSS2.5.31_1.2.26.iso" for this device.
In the "Maxtor Central Axis Admin User Guide.pdf" I found on page 48 and 49 this issue.
It seems rather possible to set the IP-adress as fixed.
Why it is not possible at yours?
Look in this manual.

Link to the download:

For Windows and MAC it should be possible, like I did read in the manuals.

For joy, Im interested in this new device of Maxtor "Central Axis Network Storage Server".

Bye,

Alfredo

Re: Maxtor Central Axis and Static IP Address or no DHCP server

Thanks for the extra effort -- yeah, I had overlooked the "Next" button on the first page of the IP Settings section of the Advanced tab. Just like the guide says (which you kindly pointed out) I CAN set a fixed address! I'll try that out and report back.
Thanks much!

Re: Maxtor Central Axis and Static IP Address or no DHCP server

The fixed IP address was working for awhile and I was thrilled, but later the connection would drop.  I also found the documentation confusing, especially as the word "account" was used with multiple meanings, both as a "user account" and as a "shared folder".  And then there are the multiple software objects -- the client application, the device firmware and the website, with overlapping and redundant functionalities.  I also realized that, since all my computers are Macs, I could achieve all but the internet access functionality thru a big firewire drive which would have much higher bandwidth, be much more portable, and cost less.  As my primary application was video streaming, this is a better way to go.  So I decided this was not the right device for me and will take it back.  But thanks again for your help -- I learned a few things about NAS which will come in handy later.
