I am new to these forums, and also to the concept of network storage. This is for my home setup, and the idea is to move large volumes of photos, off macbook pros. So before I go out and spend some money I wanted tp ask a few questions here.
I am looking at the Business Storage 2 bay NAS.
At home we have
.4 macbook pros. will probably add a mac mini or other mac desk top later.
.Airport extreme router
What I would like to do, and I think the 2 bay NAS can handle/do this:
1.move my photo files from macbookpro to NAS. I am running Aperture, and want to keep the previews and have links/references to the relocated files wirelessly, so that I can edit and export them to the internet or for printing etc. i.e. it should "feel like" they are still on my macbook pro. I have never moved my photos before, so wondering if this is an easy operation?
2.eventually store on the NAS videos and movies for tv viewing, wirelessly. Is this too ambitious?
3.centralise the family's music collection (mostly now on iTunes). would we all have complete access, or only each acocunt holder his/her own?
4.will raid setup authomatically for local back up?
5. how would I access the files onm the NAS when I am not at home?
6.i note that the NAS has a slot for a portable drive, which would be perfect for making periodical back-ups which could be taken off-site for added security, which seems perfect!
For convenience, I have a cupboard centrally in the house in which I have the modem/airport router/2 cable boxes/cell phone booster. Does the NAS unit run continusouly or only when in use (I am thinkning of whether it adds additional heat in the cupboard)?
These may be very banal questions, as I said I have no experience in this sort of setup, but nowadays it seems like NAS is getting more accessible for "home" users.
Thanks for any tips and comments or alternate suggestions if you think I am on the wrong track...!
