Fresh out of its box, plugged the Backup Plus into power then connected the USB at both ends (Sony Vaio laptop running Win 7 and the backup drive). Launched "My Computer", and the Backup Plus does not show up anywhere. I've totally disconnected the USB and power from both devices and reconnected 3 times, waited several minutes between, nothing. It's as if nothing has been connected to the laptop. The laptop does read other devices I connect including my older Seagate Desktop, but not the Backup Plus. I can't install the software from the web until I can access the Backup Plus. On the front of the Backup Plus, the round white power light is on. None of the capacity bars light up. Help?

Does the drive show in Device Manager or Disk Management?
It would also be good to try another USB cable with the drive as well as another port on your computer. Should none of these let you access the drive, connect it to another computer to see what happens then.

No, doesn't show in either of them. Not under drives, nor is there anything interesting under universal serial bus controllers.My laptop has USB 2.0, so none of my other cables have a USB 3.0 plug for the back of the Seagate. And this is my only computer, so no other one to try the connection. Seems like my best solution will be to return and exchange this one tomorrow. Thank you for your suggestions, I appreciate the help.
