Cannot connect Seagate Backup Plus for Mac to Airport Extreme

I just purchased a new 3tb Seagate Backup Plus 3 to attach to my new Airport Extreme.  When I plug the Seagate's USB in to the Airprot Extreme, the drive starts spinning, clicks and then the AE light turns amber and the wifi connection is lost.  After I unplug the HDD the signal comes back and the AE light turns green.

 

What gives?

This is USB 3.0?

 

Does the drive work fine on a computer, like a MacBook or even a PC?
