External Hard disk not recognized by my windows 7 computer

[ Edited ]

Hey,

I got a new Seagate 1TB 3.0 external hard disk yesterday. When I connect the hard disk to my computer which runs windows 7 the hard disk is not recognized. I tried connecting the hard disk in different USB ports on front panel, still doesn't recognize. However, I see a steady green LED light ON. I went over to my friend's place and connected to his computer it recognizes the device immediately and works just fine, he runs Windows 7 too. I checked under device manager in my computer and it doesn't show the drive at all. I have no idea what could be wrong. Does it have to do anything to do with the drivers?? Also to note is my friend has internet on his machine and I don't. Is the internet connection required to install the drivers for the 1st mime. Does it has anything to do with the partition cos I have 4 drives (C,D,E,F) where as he has only two (C,D). Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Re: External Hard disk not recognized by my windows 7 computer

It might just be that the drive wants to use drive letter  F: but on your machine that is already taken.

Try changing the drive letter for your external drive in Windows Disk Management

Re: External Hard disk not recognized by my windows 7 computer

If you have a Backup Plus drive, a steady white light is normal and as it should appear. Let us know if you have any other questions.

Re: External Hard disk not recognized by my windows 7 computer

I'm having a similar problem. Used to work, now it doesn't.

Windows 7

Green light flashes on device, light off sometimes when the device is moved slightly.

Computer makes the sound that it recognises a USB connection. Then it may make the USB disconnecting sound.

Nothing appears in My Computer.

E: is taken (HP Tools)

Q: is called "local disk" (no idea what that is, it says "not accessible, access denied")

Hope somebody can help.
