I just purchased the Backup Plus 3TB drive and I noticed that because of the narrow width its very unstable when sitting vertically. It's already toppled over once and I've only had it for a day.
Can it be positioned horizontally? Hope so. If not, is there a stand that can be purchased to make it more stable in the vertical position?

Haha I have tried all positions it all work well.
Though I will not recommend upside down, since the vent is on the top side.
Also I will not suggest to put other things on top of it after laying it down horizontally, since it will reduce ventilation.
no need to spend more money

There is no problem laying it horizontally, as far as the drive's operation is concerned.
But David H brings up a valid concern about heat. I suggest you try it for a while but keep an eye on how hot it gets. And definitely don't cover it with anything else.

Does it then not matter which flat surface we use as the "bottom" if placing horizontally?
I had heard that placing a drive so the platter is above the read arm is bad, since they fly above the disk, not below it.

Modern hard drives feature heads and arms on both sides of the platters. The only precautions to take are:
