Just bought a backup plus, tried first plugging it into the new retina macbook pro I just received, lights on drive came on and it started making noise, however the computer won't recognize that the drive is plugged in. Tried plugging it into my older laptop and it picks the drive right up. I've looked for software downloads/drivers but nothing I've seen so far has helped

Same problem here. Just bought a new backup plus 3TB today, PC sees it - Mac does not.
Not off to a good start seagate!

Thanks for letting us know.
Could both of you let us know whether the drive is detected in Disk Utility? What about System Profiler?
What cable are you using?
Thanks!

My drive was not detected in either. I unplugged the power source & usb several times and finally got it to show up on my Mac (never had to do this with older Seagate drives). However that is when the real issues started as I installed the drivers and software and my 2 week old top of the line 2012 brand new Mac Air become VERY unstable. I received the equivalent of the blue screen of death as it crashed several times when I plugged the drive in after installing the software.
After searching the internet it is clear this is a reoccurring issue with these 3 TB USB 3 drives. I removed all of the software from machine and it appears to running normally now, however I have not plugged the drive back in.
I have always owned seagates, I have a total of 4 older ones that are working now, however the construction and reliability has dramatically decreased over the years. Yesterday I bought 2 3TB Backup Plus drives and a 1.5TB Flex portable drive (about $500 in total). However I will probably be returning everything to BBuy today and making a formal complaint. It is clear you have an issue with this drive, the message boards have quotes from your staff saying the drivers and USB3 station is not working well with Macs and you have sent out USB 2 stations to customers.
Also, these drives run much hotter then previous drives.

How many other USB 3 storage devices have you tried with this Mac?

-2 Back Plus - horrible
-1 FRee Agent Go Flex - small issues but working
1 Western Digital (bought last night) - works fne

i am having same problem with backup plus. will sometimes turn on and then just stop being recognized. disk utility does not see the disk when it goes off line. i try it on two mac book pros. one running lion and one running snow leopard. i try the segate software to help, but it can't see the drive either. no sound from the drive except for a very slight recurring click, and thats only when the firewire is plugged in. once unplugged, no click. can't get any files on or off.
very frustrating.
any help would be very appreciated. had this drive for 1 month and have gotten no use out of it.
