I have a 500GB Seagate Backup Plus Portable drive. It has been working fine for the last 8-9 months, however now it wont read on my PC. It no longer is recognized within the Control Panel.
I have read other threads re: similar issues and have followed the Seagate troubleshooting for external hard drives on Windows 7.
There is no power cable.
The data cable is working fine.
I have tried to check the partition and format of the drive under 'Disk Management' but it does not recognize the hard drive at all. It only recognizes the C, D and E internal hard drives.
After this step I'm not sure what to do??
I can however see the hard drive name 'Seagate Backup+ RD USB Device' under Disk Drives in 'Device Manager'. When I double click on the drive name it brings up a Properties pop up window. It says the device is disabled (Code 22). I have tried 'Enabling the device' and follow the steps but it does not work just saying 'Windows was not able to enable this device.'
I have also tried connecting the drive on another PC laptop. On this computer it pops up as a drive in the Control Panel and at times I can even see the initial folders on the drive, but when I click to open these folders it is very slow to load and eventually crashes the computer and freezes up.
I also have an old Macbook Pro that I was using to share data on this drive however the internal hard drive 'died' on that a few weeks ago, hence I can not test on a Mac either.
My biggest concern is that I wont be able to retrieve the data from the drive, and it will all be lost for good. What are my chances of being able to retrieve it somehow?
If anyone can help or offer some advice I would greatly appreciate it!!

Are you able to run Windows error-checking on your external drive?
