I just picked up a Seagate Backup Plus portable drive for my computer and it suddenly stopped working. Under my computer it recognizes that the drive is there and it has a letter, but it is now listed as a local disk.
Whenever I click on the drive to access it I get an error message saying I do not have permission. Also, whenever I reboot the computer and plug the drive back in I get a message that I should scan and fix it because there is a problem with some of the files, but when I try to scan and fix the drive it just tells me I don't have permission. I am experiencing this problem on the Windows 7 side of my mac laptop, but not on the Mac OS side. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you

My new Seagate Backup Plus for Mac also does not work. It appears on my desktop. When I hit the Time Machine backup button I get the following message: Time Machine could not complete the backup. The backup disk is not available. I have done the whole reboot routine to no effect. I think Seagate is not what it says it is.

Actually, your issue may be that your Seagate Backup Plus is not in the correct format. I believe that in order to use the time machine function for macs you have to reformat your Seagate Backup Plus into some other form other than NTSF, which is believe is the HFS format (though I may be wrong, I am no computer expert).

Thanks for your question and for your help with the other poster here. You are right - Time Machine cannot work with any drive if that drive is using the NTFS driver. So if, during the setup, you selected that you want the drive to work with Mac AND PC, Time Machine can not use it. It says so right on that same screen where you select either:
Mac Only or
Mac and Windows
So if you reformat it using Mac Disk Utility, you'll be fine and Time Machine will work with it.
Now, as for your problem accessing it, please try these things:
