Just out of curiosity:

 

if i backed up my laptop onto my external hard drive (F:smileyhappy: can i edit a document in my external hard drive?

can you drag a Word document into Documents on the hard drive?

Yes, definitely! 
The Seagate Dashboard backup function saves all the files in their original format, so you can modify the documents from the external drive if you want, or move them onto the Desktop if you want.
