reformatting backup plus drive for macbook air with mountain lion

hey all: i bought this drive and when i connected it it asked me if i wanted to use time machine for the mac but then i was thinking "don't i have to reformat the drive first?" i tried to reformat the drive the instructions from seagate i.e. using disc utility but it did not work. any ideas from anyone. i want to use it as a backup drive tot he SSD drive in the laptop, but i also want to store and access videos and pictures and projects that i do using iMovie, iDVD etc. maybe i thinking to much. do i just pick time machine or is that not the way to go. Will that limit me to a certain file size i.e. 4 Gb if i don't reformat the drive? Thanks

No, the 4GB file size thing you're thinking of is for FAT32 partitions. These drives come preformatted with NTFS, which have a filesize limit of 2 terabytes, so that's no problem, but which doesn't get along all that well with MacOS.
