Re: 1TB ES.2 (ST31000340NS) firmware - SN04 -> AN05?

Hi ptr727. Have you tried limiting the drives to 1.5gb/s? It's done by a jumper on the back of the drives (or in your raid software, but I've not used the Adaptec one). For me that fixed drive timeout and subsequent controller reset issues.

BTW, I'm glad to hear Adaptec got straight on to the cause of the problem and directed you to the right firmware. 3ware messed around with me for days until I stumbled across the solution myself.

I happened to have forgotten to remove the 1.5Gb/s limiting jumpers when I first installed the drives.
And even in 1.5Gb/s mode I still got the errors.

Even if that did fix the problem, I would still have wanted it to work at 3Gb/s :smileyhappy:

Re: 1TB ES.2 (ST31000340NS) firmware - SN04 -> AN05?

Sorry to do a bit of a hijack, does anybody know if these updates also relate to the 750Gb ES.2 ST3750330NS?

I have 8 of these connected to a SAS expander and when very heavey IO occurs the drives become not detected requiring a restart of the system.

Seagate live chat just told me SN04 is the latest FW for this drive but I am VERY sceptical.

Check the README file with the AN05 firmware. I think it does support the 750GB drive.

Re: 1TB ES.2 (ST31000340NS) firmware - SN04 -> AN05?

Thanks I just found the KB article and download over at adaptec, it begs the question why was I not told about the AN05 firmware or at the very least the SN05 firmware as I am using it with a SAS controller + PMC expander?

Grr I'm now going to have to do some testing to see if it actually fixes the issue (I hope it does I really do).

I take it i'm going to have to plug each drive individually into a sata controller and flash them one by one?

Unfortunately, yes. The flash tool only sees them when connected directly. Although I suspect you could do more than one at a time :-)

Re: 1TB ES.2 (ST31000340NS) firmware - SN04 -> AN05?

Thanks for the info, to be honest I'm not going to risk flashing them connected to the SAS controller+expander so I will pull each one out (thank god for removable bays) and flash them one at a time I'm guessing its a pretty quick operation.

Its a pain in the back side to test though the drives will only drop out when under very heavy IO so I have to make sure I can happily re create the issue to make sure I can test the new firmware effectivly.

Also one other thing, is the firmware update data distructive? I.e will it wipe the data or should I wipe the data prior to the update?

I don't think so, but I certainly wouldn't like to say for sure and then you lose your data!

Thanks, actually the data is not that important it is really for the purposes of testing under the same conditions.
