200 gig drive unallocated during reformat of another drive

Hi, my system has two harddrives.  Drive C: is a WD 60gig, and drive D: is a Maxtor 6L200P0 (200gig).  I reformatted C and reinstalled Windows, but somehow the Maxtor (drive d:smileyhappy: became unallocated in the process.

What happened?  The data seems to be intact, just unaccessible (partition table gone?).  Am currently running GetDataBack to recover D: but is there an easier way to restore the drive?

Hi,

Sorry accidentally sent you a email instead of answering you here.

This could be an overlay issue or if the first drive was partitioned with a third party application.
To be sure use Seatools to determine if the 200 gb drive is ok.

Re: 200 gig drive unallocated during reformat of another drive

This just happened to me. Were you able to find a solution? I backed up my entire world to this external drive and if that data is gone - I'm in big trouble.

Thanks for your help.

Re: 200 gig drive unallocated during reformat of another drive

I didn't notice a summary of what happened. I just backed up my entire world to my Maxtor One Touch and re did my OS on my desktop. My Maxtor now shows does not appear and can only get to appear in device manager and says that it's unallocated space. Did this somehow erase that disk? Please tell me not and/or if there is a solution to fix. My entire family's pictures and home movies were on that disk.

Thanks

Re: 200 gig drive unallocated during reformat of another drive

Ah sorry didn't have time to respond earlier.  My recovery was completed before I read the response here so I didn't have a chance to try the Seatools thing.

What I did to recover the data was to use GetDataBack (google it).  Even without working partition tables, the software parsed the harddrive and basically allowed me to select whatever files I wanted to copy onto another drive.  In my case, it seemed my harddrive was 100% intact so I was able to recover everything.

Afterwards, I just repartitioned/formatted the drive and now it works anew.  Good luck!

Re: 200 gig drive unallocated during reformat of another drive

Actually come to think about it, that was the only computer where I tried out Diskeeper, a 3rd party defragmentation software...  hmm... I wonder if that was the culprit.  I had read complaints about that program corrupting drives but those seemed like isolated cases...

I've been using diskeeper for years and it's never done that to me.  Incidentally did you know that the defrag utility in Win XP is actually a cut down version of diskeeper?

That's true, I remember reading on a forum somewhere that MS bought out Diskeeper awhile back.

I guess I was just unlucky, like this guy =)
