babeliak ->
i looked to the pictures you provided, and the decrease of sequential performance of one HDD has possible following cause:
-st2000dm001 2tb drive has 3 platters same density like 3tb version
-so there is just part of area used there
-sequential speed depends on the position according to center (inner - outer)
-> so if your drive is using inner 2/3 of plates areas the speed will be lower than if outer 2/3 are used.
of course there can be another cause ....

Does anyone else notice the chirping seems to stop for extended periods, then suddenly return with a vengeance? heh
I can't say I noticed it to much yesterday, but all of a sudden, in the last 2 hours it seems to be doing it every 10-20 minutes.

@ Cantbecanit: This thread was made by me to discuss in a civilized way experiences, ideas, solutions for this very annoying (and worrying) problem (or "feature") that a certain model of Seagate disk are showing.
It's NOT intended for just collecting Serial Numbers of worried users.
We will be happy to continue sending our serial numbers to Alan, as part of a bigger strategy of problem solving, since it is one of the principal duties of any manufacturer to provide the best possible support for the products he sells.
So please don't hijack this thread.
If you want collect serial numbers (or discuss manufacturing tolerances, quality control or marketing strategies) please open another thread, as anybody else do. I will be happy to contribute there.
If Seagate is happy to have us here, we will be happy to contribute in an educated and constructive way, if not, we will be happy to move elsewere (the internet is a huuuuuge space of discussion).
@all: I can assume that those disks are targeted for a consumer segment, but atm used mainly in NAS for backups in small workgroups, Video editing, Audio editing, image editing... where a lot of space and fast access times are required, in a typical pro or semipro setup.
I feel free to assume that in this segment APM isn't a priority, so we will not get angry if Seagate releases a FW with this feature fully disabled.

Alan will give you an announcment in due time so discuss away all you like because until an official statement is ok'd by the company nothing more is going to happen, I've suggested everything I can think of as possibilities for it, some info may come to light to prove me right on the mechanical side of things but until then nothing is going to change.
Anyway best of luck with it chaps, I honestly hope you get a full fix for it whatever it turns out to be in the end, ![]()

@ Cantbecanit: nothing personal, but I would suggest that if you're done,
than we are in need of somebody else being the "interface" with seagate.
@ Admin: is there somebody else willing to play this role? Or have we to look somewhere else?
@ all: keep cool and smiling.![]()

removed SNs are: [Edited: Removed personal information per the community rules and regulations.], DOM (Date Of Manufacture) is 3/2012, newer SLOWER drives have DOM from 4/2012 onwards...
[Edit: Don't post your serial numbers unless you want someone to steal your drive's unique number. Follow the instructions about PMing AlanM at the top of the thread]

@colltempo
@spcxxx
Excuse me, but NO, you are WRONG!
Newly redesigned drives from ST2000DM001 family with MOD from 4/2012 onwards are performing POOR - up to 25-30% WORSE !!!
Please see my test results, I compared 3 identical drives, I just returned the replacement drive too !!!
If I do not get a good performing drive next, I will return ALL THREE of them and give WD a try.
I bought this series drives based on user review here: overclockers.co.uk - user test
Now I make my unexpected bitter experience on my own.

each test which you see in picture is one 2TB ST2000DM001 HDD, all together 3 of them at the same time in my system tried and tested, so yu can see and compare in family variation!
Now to your reply:
Thats not the point, I have tested and compared 3 brand new sealed/unused (after unpacking I did full format in Win7x64) identical hard drives of the type ST2000DM001 (2TB Barracuda, 7200rpm, 2 platters @ 500GB/platter data density):
2 drives with MOD 3/2012 have performed wery well (I still have them, not using them as I need 3 drives for my RAID5),
1 drive has performed poorly, returned and replaced -->
1 replacement drive MOD 4/2012 is performing 25% worse (returned, awaiting replacement).
THESE ARE ALL IDENTICAL TYPE/SERIES = ST2000DM001, only redesigned slightly from 4/2012 onwards.
I talk about variation in between 2TB Barracudas!
Why do you mention 3TB drive?
They just ruined it completelly IMHO.

Hey babeliak it might be a good idea to start a new thread on this problem as it sounds like a totally different issue? We are really trying to keep this thread on subject and 100% focused on the head park / chirp issue ![]()
