Re: 2TB ST2000DM001 + 3TB STBD3000100 Barracudas Making Weird "chirp" Sound

I can also confirm that the latest firmware (CC4H) doesn't fix the chirping noise on my hard drive either. I have the ST1000DM003-9YN162 and am still getting random chirping sounds and the occasional random click. Brand new drive as well. Working fine otherwise, but the sounds are irritating.

So is this a NORMAL FEATURE or a DEFECT?

It would be nice to get a clear answer on this so I can return my hard drive before the 30 days limit if the frequent chirping is a defect.

I doubt it's a defect, more like a bug. If the noise doesn't bother you, then keep the drive. If it annoys you, get something else.

It's not just the ST2000DM001. I have an external that has the same issue, still an M001 though.

Hi,

do not be fooled.

Replacement the HD as soon as possible and do not trust Seatool, the seatool will say that the HD is in perfect condition, until one day turn on the computer and no longer works.

Replacement the HD is the only solution, as many times as necessary until you send an HD without problems.

This model has a production error, but Seagate does not want to remove it from the shops.

The solutions give you, do not work. I update the firmware and stopped making noise, 5 days later the HD was dead.

Do not trust the firmware updates. It's a hardware problem and not fixed with a firmware update. If so would already have been fixed in the first patch.

The only solution is massive change around the world.

Do not be fooled.

When you replaced the harddrive, didn't you wind up with just the same model?

I guess his meaning is to replace HDD until new models revision is released or new HDD-series are released =)

My suggestions:

don't buy those disk models. Period

If you already own one (or two as in my case) ask for replacement.

They will give you probably a refurbished one (and if yoou are lucky the problem was resolved during

refurbishment), but the warranty will still be valid.

Problem: 2 x 2TB ST2000DM001 drives chirping

I've got to agree with that, there just seems to be too much uncertainty here.

Go Barracuda XT or something else. Personally, I've got my eye on Hitachi... just waiting for the prices to get a bit lower, darn those floods!
