If you're on a Mac, hdapm was just updated in the last couple of days to version 1.2. It completely stopped the chirping in my striped pair of ST3000DM001-9YN166 – CC4B. http://mckinlay.net.nz/hdapm/

What do you mean by "completely" ? After reboot chirping is still there, correct ?

Which firmware version do you have installed?

Just to sum things up for those who are in a hurry:
The new firmware version is a cosmetic patch for the chirping problem as it mitigates the
audible part (lets say the "chirp" is diminished by a factor of 2) but it doesn't solve the underlying problem, the
head parking when idle. This head parking, intended to reduce power consumption of the disks, increases the Load Cycles
the heads are doing, everytime the heads are requested to do a read or write operation.
Every load is a chirp.
As heads are designed to do a certain number of load cycles, some users calculated that this number will be reached in little more than ONE year of normal use. The solution would be to disable the Power Management of the disk, avoiding the head parking, what is doable with HDPARM but only until the system reboots.
As many users (including me) are worried about the reliability of our disks, where we have stored our valuable data, we urged Seagate to:
1. Correct the problem by disabling permanently Power Management with a new firmware release
2. Saying clearly that the a high number of load cycles (500.000 or 600.000) won't affect performance or reliability of the disks.
The actual firmware, as I said, is a cosmetic patch. Other brands released firmwares that corrects similar problems definitively, but Seagate didn't, and as time passes, chances are getting smaller to have some news.

Aplogies, haven't been back since my first post. Yes, the latest version 1.2 of hdapm has completely stopped the chirping of my two Seagates. AFAIK it fires up automatically on boot or reboot. Works like a charm for me, YMMV.

I just bought a new hard drive model ST2000DM001, and this device emits an annoying noise often
The hard drive is new, is empty and has not yet been partitioned
I tried it as a second disk at idle
It is a noise like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kt6asKkMJq0
The Hard disc is one that has a 1TB/platte
------------------------------------------
The hard disk information are:
SN: [Edited: Removed personal information per the community rules and regulations.]
PN: 9YN164
Firmware: CC4B
Made in Thailand
Date: 12504
DOM: 06/2012
------------------------------------------
Could anyone tell me if all disks of the same model "ST2000DM001" have the same problem?
Or this happens only with some hard discs?
Is this annoying noise, is normal in this model ST2000DM001?
Is this a manufacturing defect?
Why this model emits this annoying noise? What happens? What is the cause?
Can you fix this?
What is the solution to this problem?
I hope SEAGATE gives an effective solution to this problem and tell us what is the real cause why this model "ST2000DM001" emits this annoying noise.
The most important thing for us is not to lose the information stored on hard drives
Thanks

@ LuisVG
please read the thread, all the issues, symptoms and temporary solutions are widely described.
There's no definitive solution still.
As a general rule have always a backup of your data, independently of the disk you are using.
But, as I said before: if you don't trust the disk, or you planning to put valuable data on it, return the disk to your seller and go for another brand. Don't return it to Seagate, they will probably send you a refurbished one with the same problem.

given how low disk prices are now, I usually have 10-20 of the in the shop
right now I think I have 15 working disks
i have 4 machines all holding a copy of my most important stuff

Piling on, since it's both annoying (quiet system--this is virtually the only noise it makes) and disconcerting, given the fact that it's probably APM-related head parking/unparking. This one's an ST3000DM003 1TB Platter, firmware recently flashed to CC4H. The drive was purchased and brought online about 2 weeks ago. Chirps started this past Thursday.
Rest of the system:
Asus P8Z77-V LK board
Intel Core i5-2400 3.1 GHz
8GB G.Skill PC1866 RAM
eVGA GTX 560 graphics
Creative Fatal1ty series sound card
Corsair 750TX PSU
Running Win7 Home Premium.
After the firmware update (from CC4B), the chirps are now isolated to periods in which the drive is actually in use, but are quite frequent in that event (several dozen/hour). This includes bootup and shutdown.
