Re: 2TB ST2000DM001 Barracuda from Seagate seriously cripled through redesign in 3/2012 or 4/2012

This disc brings design flaw and error in manufacturing.
It is no coincidence that the entry of this model has dropped the guarantee of 5 to 1 year.
They think we're idiots, and we will be if instead of writing comments here and waiting days to receive a reply we do not making RMA in Mass and give back to these guys all these defective discs.

Replacement all HD and change the HD manufacturer.

@Fernando: Test on USB are completely useless. Bad performance is always the problem with USB. It's a nice universal connection, but for HDD's it's better to use eSata.

@jcvjcvjcvjcv: Not true, because I compared both and they are max 1% on difference, if that.

@vsm1966: This remembers me the 7200.11 case!

[ Edited ]

So with an E as third digit I can be sure to have a 1TB platter version?

Does anyone know what the "rule" is at them moment, 2 or 3 Platter versions?

BTW I hope they don't build the HDs like this forum, absolutely unusable with Opera, lousy IE focused board.

Is there maybe an official around that can say something about the commonness of the 1TB platter version?

Just bought one here in Germany and unfortunately it seems to be a 3 disc version and I wonder if the 1TB version is maybe not shipped to Europe.

BTW what about the ST3000DM001 do the have defiantly 3 1TB discs or could there be a 4 disc version???

@ChromeBeauty, your hardwareluxx.de photo requires us to login before we can see it.

I suspect that W24 drives use the lower density platters, but I'm not certain. You could check the depth of the depression in the top cover, as explained in an earlier post.

BTW, I'm also an Opera devotee. However, I'm using Firefox to post to this forum because Lithium software is garbage. I would prefer to use stronger language, but forum rules don't allow it.

Re: 2TB ST2000DM001 Barracuda from Seagate seriously cripled through redesign in 3/2012 or 4/2012

Well I'm not sure about the dent. I have a ST2000DM001 and a ST3000DM001 version here and both have the same dent, what should I expect now a 3TB with 4 discs??? To be honest I'm feed up by this game that the HD companies keep playing and I simply will buy another 3TB as system HD instead of the 2TB, so I can be sure to have drives with the same performance and with a performance that is stated in the PDF and the web-page and not a performance that stays behind those numbers. I will try to bench the 3TB tomorrow so I can be sure of its performance, I really wonder if it comes past the 200Mb mark.

ISTM that your W24 drive has a shallow depression, in which case it probably has 3 platters.

BTW, Western Digital has been doing this kind of thing for a long time, probably a lot longer than Seagate.

Here is one example:
