Re: 3TB Barracuda STBD3000100 Making Weird "chirp" Sound?

[ Edited ]

Hey guys !

I was just googling this thing myself , i have EXACTLY the same issue with my brand new Seagate Barracuda 3TB (same model as op's)

It makes this exact sound randomly and same as in op's example it's doing it even while busy.

In example i was just installing Witcher 2 EE and clicked WMP to listen to some music and it made this sound.

I have noticed this since i first hooked it up yesterday , it's making this sound rather often but in completly random moments.

It's really stressing me out , I'd hate to have it fail  , i hope it's not an issue with the drive cause i bought it in U.S and I'd hate to having to send it back now  :smileysad:

(i live in UK)

Is there any explanation for this ?

BTW i have almost 2 year old Seagate Barracuda 1.5 TB 7200RPM  (ST31500341AS) which i damaged myself , I've broken SATA power and data plugs on the drive (pressed on the cables wrong way :smileyembarrassed: )

when it was almost new.

I went through lots of different tricks to make it work and with all the abuse it endured i was kinda expecting it to fail and it simply refused :smileysurprised:

It was still working great till yesterday when it retired after transferring all the data to the new one , real trooper that drive.

Case in point it never made souds like that , in fact it was nerly silent , i was kinda hoping for the same level of reliability, speed and noise from this one.

@ Chaos, need to see some specs so I can answer properly, your WMP thing is interesting though, but I can't really comment until I know what you are rigged like.

Ohh well it looks like Google and This Thread are starting to make good use of each other. Now hopefully if enough people find this thread perhaps we can all try to find a solution to the problem. Clearly it's a hardware issue now the only question is whether or not it can be fixed with a firmware update and whether or not Seagate will release one. :smileytongue:

I'll bring it to Alans attention, I can't say for sure if it's in need of one or not as I don't have this model myself, mines a 3TB but a different flavour.

Matter raised, but he won't see it until Monday chaps.

You guys are using the latest Intel RST drivers aren't you? and if so try a reload of them.

Re: 3TB Barracuda STBD3000100 Making Weird "chirp" Sound?

First of all: Sorry for my bad English. Im not a native English speaker.

I have exactly the same noise as OP does.

Furthermore sometimesI got short freezes when I play games that are installed on my new drive and the sound appears. That's more annoying than just the chirp sound...

This is the second drive I got, the first I swapped by the vendor because of the same problem. I m still a bit uncertain if this is just a problem with my spec. But it's "good" to see others with the same noise and behavior of the drive in here.

My Specs:

Mainboard: Asus maximus Fomular

CPU: Intel XenonX3350

Ram: 4GB

OS: WIN 7 Prof x64

OS Drive: Corsair SSD

Data: 3TB Seagate Barracuda STBD3000100  plugged inside the tower.

I've tried to change powersupply and other sata ports. I have also tried to play with APM settings, did not helped.

I m not a pro so I've not change any Firmware for the MB or the Drive.

If i should, just tell me.

Don't worry buddy it's not you, it's the drive. Not trying to be a hater towards Seagate but just being realistic and going by the facts. I bought two of the same exact drive and they are both making the same noise. Three other people so far who are also confirmed hearing the same noise. Definitely too coincidental in my opinion.

I would think that if this noise were part of the normal drive workings then Seagate should have enclosed some kinda notice in the box informing users of the increased/special noises which aren't commonly heard in every other hard drive out there on the market.

I dunno the whole thing seems really bizarre to me. Definitely got me curious to see what the outcome will be.

Re: 3TB Barracuda STBD3000100 Making Weird "chirp" Sound?

@ Sugarfly, you should check with Corsair for a FW update on your SSD, Sandforce is still buggy, and also how is yours set, boot and slave or Raid0?

@ Xenon, thats hardly fair is it, 3 units out of probably 50000, yours may well be a bad one but wait until I get a reply from Alan before tarbrushing the model as bad overall.

Mine's the 2 TB sister drive (STD2000101) 2 weeks old, and it's doing the exact same thing, right out of the box. Making the exact same noise. I'm just glad I went to to your forum first. (edited to comply with forum rules)

Re: 3TB Barracuda STBD3000100 Making Weird "chirp" Sound?

Just wanted to add, that I ran the "short hard drive diagnostics test" from HP, and it passed with flying colors. This included the "SMART status test", "SMART short self test", "random seek test", "funnel seek test", and 2 "surface scan tests". Again if that helps?

lol, hey I just call it like I see it. This thread has only been here a week and now you got yet another customer who just posted an hour after you did so clearly they are starting to roll in now. Yeah this might be a small amount of people SO FAR, but these are just the people who have actually found this thread. Who knows how many others out there who didn't care to take the time to research the issue and either took their drive back or just said whatever and let it ride. Not to mention that the average person probably doesn't even pay attention to small details like these so who knows how many drives are out there "chirping away" while the customer probably doesn't even have a clue or probably thinks it's just normal.

Like I said I'm not here to bash, I've got ~$350 bucks invested in these two drives so I'm just looking for some answers and solutions. But in the meantime it is very disappointing to say the least. It's not like Seagate is the new kid on the block and hasn't been making hard drives for years and years....
