I'm pretty sure if they pass Seatools this is some sort of config error, I had it myself briefly with mine but I can't remember how I resolved it, iirc it was a clean house move that sorted it,

Do these steps

Test with Seatools Windows edition

Install HD Sentinal for health and error checking

Update any and all drivers (this means re-install over the top even if the driver you have is current)

Take it out of the case and place it somewhere it won't get knocked about to check it's not a sound transfer getting amp'd up

However if you really want to swap em in, do it asap before the consumer grace period runs out, and do it back to the re-seller or you will end up with re-furbs that were broken in exchange, good luck whichever way you turn with it.

Yeah but just because a drive passes Seatools doesn't mean that there isn't still something wrong. Diagnostic software isn't always gonna pick up everything.

 I'm glad I found this thread. I bought the 3TB ST3000DM001 model of this drive a few days ago from Amazon, and it also had the same sound  mentioned here right after I put it in a usb Mediasonic ProBox enclosure.  The drive otherwise seems to work fine under Windows and Ubuntu Linux.

I tested the drive in Seatools and got a failure result for the drive self test because drive serial number could not be detected but a pass on the short generic test. Hopefully there might be a fix for this issue because I would not want to send a drive that is working fine back to the store.

Another chirping Seagate.

This time in an MacPro (SnowLeopard / Lion, makes no difference).

Drive in question is brand new Barracuda 2TB, (ST2000DM001-9YN164).

Month old. Same behaviour from day one.

I actually bought two of them. Haven't troubleshoot them yet, but it might be very possible that both of them are doing the same thing. It hard to tell, sound is EXACTLY the same every single time..

I was thinking if it was a mechanical fault, wouldn't there be at least a slight variation?

Drives are not in a RAID, one is full 2TB, the other currently partitioned in 1.5TB-0.5 TB.....

Anyway, can't shed any more light on the matter, just wanted to add another model, another platform.

Its hard to pinpoint the moment it does it, as it's completely random. I get between 5-10 chirps per hour.

Divide that by two drives, I am not sure it's both of them, but it's very likely.

Needles to say, drives work as expected, but I am watching them like a hawk.

I was thinking of doing some light troubleshoot on them, but it seems there is no point, it's seems to be "widespread", across diff models and platforms...

As a comparison, look into this old Hitachi drive smartmontools output.

I think there are at least some worrying numbers in Seagate output.

At least in a "prefail" related attributes,

namely 1."Raw Read Error Rate", and 7."Seek Error Rate"....

Hitachi has Zero... After 20 000 hours....

Maybe somebody can put some more meaning on these numbers..

I to am having the same problem. I have 2 of them in a netgear NAS. Both HDD's make the noise.

I uploaded a Video to youtube and sent it to netgear. They were nice enuff to replace the NAS to try and solve the problem... But of couse it hasn't.

@juddersnz, Thanks for posting that video, at least that further comfirns that people are hearing the EXACT SAME SOUND and not some other sound.

I have to admit that i'm a bit upset since nearly every part of my new system doesn't run as well as i excepted.... the hdd is still on my mind. No chance to work now, so i found more information... enjoy...

I've also read about a guy who just swapped 4 HDDs... and still got this issue.
