I have this same issue too, installed the HDD yesterday and started hearing these chirp noises occasionally that I've never heard from an HDD (I assumed it was just a dud that would die soon so was ready to RMA until I researched online). This drive won't be used for anything other than storage/fraps recording and it makes the noise occasionally, sometimes a few within the space of 1-3 minutes. Posted more at length in the other thread.

Ok guys it has been taken upstairs and it is being looked into and taken seriously, that's not an admission there is actually anything wrong btw but if there is a bug it will be getting sorted out so stay tuned on the updates pages incase a new flash does appear, I'm a bit hands tied tbh I don't have this particular drive as mine is an earlier series model so I'm unable to confirm or deny any chirps as mine doesn't do it,
In the meantime I would suggest only using them on the Intel 6GB/s ports and not the Marvell ones, ensure you connections are secure and you have the latest drivers for your rig installed,
If there is a bug I'm sure the company would like to thank you all for bringing it to their attention, as some have mentioned a Seagate drive is still the best performing HDD that doesn't cost the earth to buy in comparison to others, and I would also install HD Sentinal to monitor the drives health, not that I think this will degrade the drive but should yours start on the downward percentages you can at least have enough warning to get your data off before a date with disaster comes.
All the best Cant. ![]()

Same issue here for 3 of my:
ST2000DM001-9YN164
Have already sent one back to Amazon due to this noise and dropping out of the RAID set shortly after. They've been running less than a week.
This is the EXACT same sound that I am hearing:
Drives FW revision:
CC4C x2
CC9C x1
RMA'ed drive FW rev:
CC9C
Hope this helps...

How soon can we expect an official response on this? I need to know ASAP because it would be much easier to just return it to my retailer (Dabs) than have to wait too long then only be able to RMA it to Seagate in which case I couldn't get my money back and might just receive another faulty HDD. Have there been stories of the HDD failing after hearing this noise?

Adding another case to the thread. It's ST3000DM001 (CC4C) this time. Just picked up the drive yesterday.
Reminds me of the time I had the infamous firmware issue with a Maxtor 1TB...
Hope this issue is resolved soon.

I wouldn't expect to hear anything anytime soon and personally I wouldn't bother myself with having to RMA a brand new product. I would just take it back before it's too late and then keep an eye out for a resolution if you're that concerned. I already took one of my drives back and the only reason I still have the other is because my old roommate is the store manager at the place where I get all my hardware so he will return anything I need whenever I want. But clearly not everyone has it like that so gotta do what you gotta do!

Ben, if you feel uncertain return it to Dabs and get your money back or an exchange, don't wait until it's too late to return, or wait for a fix if one is needed.
Xenon, are you on a mission mate, I've tried to help you and I've got things being investigated yet you are reading like you just want to pump bad press out now.
And let me remind you all
UK Prices
Seagate 3TB - £125
WD 3TB - £195
Hitachi 3TB - £196
So before we all get in a twist about things, lets remember who gives the best value, and that WD have just as many problems as anyone else, if this is a bug it will be fixed, the 7200.11 drive bug was addressed ok, but one crucial thing that did happen was the firm rushed out a bad fix which made things worse, so now it's done right before being released, and as the "fault" is a new discovery it takes time to identify what is causing it and then to rectify it, that's assuming there's anything wrong in the first place that is.
For those who can return them to the vendor do so if you wish, that is your legal right, for others prepared to wait on and get a fix stay tuned, if you are worried you may be further damaging the drive don't use it until we have some more news for you, and thx for your patience for those that are being patient.

I think what people want to know here (i know i do) is , should we return the drives , is it how those drives wotk , or is it a bug that will be fixed ?
I for one bought my drive in US and honestly i don't fancy sending it back , geting a new one or buying a differnt brand drive.
As i said before other than that noise I'm very happy with this drive , it's fast it's big and it was cheaper that competitions offerings , add to this my previous good experience with Seagate and everything would be great .. ........ just this worrying sound.
I would go even further , if we could officially confirm that this sound is not a defect and drive will work fine , i could live with that , it's the uncertainty what's bugging me personally.
P.S Here's the firmware no for my drive , maybe it will help somehow -- CC9C

I think you're so caught up in being a Seagate cheerleader that it's clouded your ability to understand why some people like myself might be a little bit frustrated. You seem to get very easily offended by certain comments when really there's no reason. Do you have stock in Seagate or something? I personally DO NOT, I'm just a CUSTOMER who bought a Seagate drive which clearly has issues and has left me very frustrated and upset. You make it seem like I'm trying to bash the Seagate name for no reason. I could care less about Seagate or any other company out there for that matter. What I do care about is the products that I pay money for that don't work as they should. Some customers have different tolerances when dealing with busted products. Me personally I have a pretty low tolerance especially when were talking about a product from a company who has been making hard drives for how many years now?? Seagate didn't just open up shop a year ago they been around a long time. So yeah I do find it pretty disappointing that my brand new hard drives are having weird issues.
From the very start of this thread you been trying to shift the blame onto everything else BUT the drive itself. Lest we forget back on page two of this thread you tried saying how 3 units outa 50,000 wasn't really a fair number to be getting upset over. And what did I say to you like three posts after that? Well now here we are five pages later and the complaints are still continuing to roll thru. I think that if you yourself actually owned the drive that we're all here discussing, you'd probably be singing a different tune instead of being such a Seagate cheerleader.
Like I said earlier, I could care less about Seagate, or WD or Hitachi or any other HD manufacturer. I'm here to find a resolution to issue with my SEAGATE drives. Yeah my words might not always be so nice but then again if my brand new Seagate drive worked just like the six Western Digital drives I have sitting here did then I wouldn't have anything bad to say ![]()
