3tb St3000dm001-9yn166 lags/slow when 2 or more things done at the same time in win 7 x64

[ Edited ]

My build:

gigabyte z68x-ud3h-b3

intel 2500k

3tb St3000dm001-9yn166 using sata 3 cable

patriot g2 8gb ram

evga 550 ti video card

hdTune benchmark: access time 63.7, burstrate 14.2mb/s,

I have the latest bios updates and firmware updates for both motherboard and hd.

Here is the issue:

When i am doing something on my computer, for example: browse web, watch movie, play game,.. etc

And at the same time, the computer is doing any of the following: installing updates, installing drivers, extracting archives, installing game, copying alot of data from one hd to another, installing game update, etc...

The the whole system locks up/ lags like it is going 1 frame per second. It happends 9/10 times.

I have tried to do full format, reinstall windows. no change.

I have called seagate support, we tried to reformat the computer again, and while i was installing drivers while being on the phone with tech it seemed fine. As soon as i hanged up and started browsing internet and doing windows update, the browser locked up and would not respond to anything untill the updates were done.

I did a full scan using sea tools, no issue.

The issue appears only if i perform hard drive operation and do something else on computer. If i do one or the other, then the issue is not there.

My other 500gb seagate hd has no issues like that, I could have runned 2 games, installed visual studio, while doing windows updates and copying lots of data from one computer to another, and it was blazingly fast.

Does anyone knows what the issue could relate too? And how can i solve it?

oh my gosh. i have EXACTLY the same problem with my 2TB ST2000DL003 drive.

the firmware rev is CC3C.

if im doing ANYTHING thats reading or writing to the drive for a long time. writing a file. copying, etc.  and try to do anything else the speed slows down INCREDIBLY. not half the speed, i dont think even a quarter of the speed. it almost comes to a halt.

say im copying or writing a file to the disk and try to do something as simple as deleting a couple of text files.. explorer freezes and says not responding! for like 20 seconds.. its ridiculous.

this is my main drive in my brand new ivy bridge system thats running at 4.4ghz. its like a complete joke.

my motherboard is an asus maximus v gene if that helps.

i bought 2 of these drives, one for backup. i want a full refund if this cannot be fixed. this is crazy.

yea, but so far, there has been no reply, seagate has no idea. I wish there would be a way to pin point the reason for it.

Have you tried reading out S.M.A.R.T. Values
The 4 disks in the QNAP are showing millions of "Read Error Rate" and "Seek Error Rate"
On Windows you can use HDD Health, CrystalDiskInfo, SmartMonTools, ....
Quick Self test: passed

Are you in AHCi mode, have you the latest RST driver installed, the figures are lousy but I don't think it's the drives doing it tbh, more the instruction sent to the drives.

i was originally in ahci mode. i built my system for ivy bridge but the cpu was not available yet so it ran on ahci mode for weeks before i added the new cpu that supported ssd caching. the problem was very apparent at that time as well. so obviously now its running in raid mode.

i first tried all of the drivers that asus suggests on my motherboards page on their site. but have also tried others as well.

as of right now the intel driver update utility page tells me the driver version is newest: 11.1.0.1006

i also have the newest bios available for my motherboard (asus maximus v gene): 0813
