Sorry for my bad English, I am from Austria / Europe. Our language here is German.
Some, a lot, free forums here in Europe wrote yesterday and today the same.
Heise.de is one of the best in Germany, they own a lot of computer magazines too.
They write as an Update just a few hours ago:
"Die neue Firmware ist laut Hersteller noch nicht fertig und soll erst "innerhalb der nächsten Tage" erhältlich sein." (German)
translated into English:
"The new Firmware, according to the manufactor, is not finished right now and should be available "within the next days"."
Whatever it means...
I suggest everybody: Buy external USB Drives immediately and make Backups immediately. Don´t wait.
And don`t turn off your computer !!!
Good Luck!
Best regards
Gerhard

I'll wait till I hear from a Seagate representative before I believe the data recovery story!

I sent seagate an email with my hdd's stats and asked them where can i find the firmware update and they replied me with the following message:
"Your question has been received under Case #********. If you have any questions regarding your case or if your case has not been resolved please contact Seagate Customer Support and reference your case number above.
Seagate Customer Support"
PLEASE can someone explain me what this message means?

Thanks, so i just wait for an email? Because i could not understand if they have an answer to the question or not. Thanks again.
Yes. I think they're backlogged and it's weekend. I haven't gotten my e-mail reply either.

i ve done it . I m following this story since some days ,and this make me fear the worst . So i ve ordered friday other internal HDD from other brand than seagate with same capacity than my seagate 7200.11 with sd15 firmware to duplicate data . i will receive it tomorow or tuesday ...but today the checker told me , my hdd is not affected by the bug !? ... never mind , because like you've wrote it , it is better to duplicate data to avoid bad surprise . On other thread , a people wrote this mind :
Some facts.
They produce over 10 millions of 3.5" HDs per month (and around 5 millions of 2.5" HDs), so the problem is there for around 6 months at least.
This means, over 60 millions 3.5" HDs where shipped until 31/12/2008. The faulty rate is as high (or higher) than 50%, saying is just 30~40% is a joke.
So, let stick with just 50%, that means at least 30 millions 3.5" HDs are screwed, now imagine Seagate trying to fix that! Even if they get a super 3rd party company to fix all that, they will never do over a million fixes per month (is just inhuman!), so they will spent 3 years (at least) to fix all those HDs !
This will be just the CAOS, if you don't believe me, just wait and see.
perhap's the list of affected hdd will grow up with days !

ok4you.at :
Thank you very much. I have fired off an e-mail requesting information on renumeration as I ended up having my drive restored by a third party company! Im looking forward to hearing the outcome!

Hmm.... do I have to write the serial number with capital letters or how?
Because when I write them in caps, it appears that my drives are affected ![]()
Anyway, @Seagate: please put some effort in the new firmware so we can still rely on your products next time!
