Advise for S.M.A.R.T errors

Greetings from Greece!

 

I'm really worried about the results I'm getting from HDSentinel. Can you please advise if I can do something or return the disk? I'm currently running SeaTools checks and so far Short Test Passed. I'll post results later.

 

Health is only 23% !!!

I ran the following tests. All passed with Seatools for Windows (should I use for DOS?)

 

S.M.A.R.T check

Short Drive Self Test

Long Drive Self Test

Short Generic.

 

How is this possible? HD Sentinel gives my drive 2 months life remaining.

 

Please tell me what you think. I would greatly appreciate it. What other tests do you suggest I run?

I am not an expert, so take this opinion with caution.

 

Anything that tells you "2 months of life remaining" is crazy.  Nobody can know that kind of thing.

 

HDS flagged two attributes and I agree that they are not good.  Reallocated Sector Count has a raw value that is quite a bit higher than I'd like ( 0x7e == 126).  I don't know how serious Spin Retry Count is, but you've had 4.

 

All this badness could have come from one event, or it could be growing.  I recommend continuously watching those numbers to see if they grow.

So, actually the bad readings are:

 

Reallocated Sectors : 126

Spin Retry Count: 4

 

How is SeaTools (for Windows) not showing any of these or is it supposed not to?

How I can prove I have all these problems in case I want to return my hard drive to the dealer?

SeaTools is (apparently) not supposed to show you details.  Seems dumb to me.  I guess that Seagate feels detailed information might just confuse customers.

 

"Prove" is a slippery concept.

 

Will your dealer take the drive back for you?  That is more pleasant than RMAing to Seagate directly.

 

I'd just take the report you got back to the dealer and tell him that the drive appears to be dying and that you'd like it replaced before it is too late.  It looks as if you can recover all your data at this point; once the drive dies, the data might be lost.

If the drive does reach its limit of SMART errors the grown list is now full and the only way to use the disk again is gain access to the grown list and delete the errors.

If you are lucky enough to be able to do this (altho im sure sure if anyone bar seagate can) you are stuck with the question why has there been so many errors?

 

Personaly a disk which has failed smart might aswell be binned as there is obviously somthing wrong beyond the smart errors. My advice would be to back up your data and send the drive back if its still under warranty

According to attribute 194, the highest temperature recorded by your drive is 59C.

I notice that it is identified as "E-SATA 2", which suggests it is an external drive.

It would appear, then, that your external enclosure does not have adequate ventilation.

The disk is working properly. I haven't noticed anything during its usage.

The Maximum temperature recorded is because I had once attached it to the computer with cables outside the box. It's not on an external enclosure, I just named it that way.

The Seagate Dos Tools passed all the tests, so what I did is reset the SMART attributes in HDSentinel and I will monitor the disk from now on to see if more errors appear.
