Barracuda 32000641 Not Spinning Up

I have a 2TB Barracuda drive 32000641AS (9GV168-301) and also a 3TB Barracuda drive that I don't have the model number at the moment.

Neither of the drives spin up in my external USB3 HD enclosure. The enclosure is a StarTech SAT3510BU3.

Both of these drives are working properly in a desktop computer.

All of my other drives including 2TB WD and 2TB Hitachi drives do spin up and work just fine in the enclosure

I was told by Startech that since the Seagate drive in question requires 2.8A startup current and the included power supply is only 2.0A, I would need a larger power supply.

I purchased a 5.0A power supply and tried that with the same results. All drives except the Seagate drives spin up.

I contacted Startech again and they said that it has to be something different about the Seagate drives as power is now not a factor.

I have measured the 5v and 12v at the connector and both voltages are nominal. 5V on pins 7,8,9. 12V on 13,14,15. Ground on 4,5,6,,10,12.

I could not find a proper data sheet for this drive but did find one for another drive 32000542 and it shows the power connector pinout. It shows pin11 as ground or LED signal and says if grounded, drive does not use deferred spin.

I checked the voltage on pin11 of the enclosure and it seems like it is floating.

How can I get these drives to spin up? Do I need to ground pin 11?

thanks,

Barry

Re: Barracuda 32000641 Not Spinning Up

Hello,

When you get a chance, let us know what the model is of the 3TB drive in question. Here is a  link to some data sheets, but I am not sure which model that you may have. Hopefully that helps, but it it may be hard to tell what is going on since the drives do work properly when connected to a desktop computer.

Re: Barracuda 32000641 Not Spinning Up

You can find your drive's Product Manual by using filters to refine Google's searches:

http://www.google.com/search?q=%22ST32000641AS%22+filetype%3Apdf+OR+filetype%3Adoc+%22manual%22+OR+%...

As for pin #11, I would ground it. I suspect it is probably driven by an open collector driver on the USB-SATA bridge PCB, in which case shorting this pin to ground should do no damage. That's your call, though.
