Hi I have a Seagate 750gb ultra ATA drive, internal, which seems to have lost the plot a bit.
My first warning was a error message asking me to use ctrl alt del to reboot. I did and round and around it went. The OS is not detected. I put the OS disk in and not alot would work. The bios recognises the HD.
At first the messages stated the MBR/Boot ini was not working. I used the dos commands to fix it, it didn't.
I ran the seagate tools and it wouldn't have them full stop.
I ran a recovery program and my data is there and it managed to get some of it off.
However, fdisk doesn't work, format doesn't work, HD wipers don't work, any partition managers don't work. MBR fixers don't work. half of the DOS programs fail to work. all can't read the drive.
I did run a HD tool program via DOS, which reported bad sectors over 8 mb of them before the computer crashed. I then re-ran another seagate tool, it passed first test, the long test it failed stating it could not read, I think it said MBR record, I got so angry with it I forgot to write it down, and there were bad sectors. These it stated could not be fixed.
Is this HD beyond hope of recovering. What I don't get is if I can read my data via a recovery program, why can't I fix the drive or wipe it out? The latter I would like to do, as I'm not comfortable sending my HD with it all on it.
Would also a ISO image work if I try to put it back on the HD?
There is also the problem it maybe me not understding how to DOS commands properly, so I can't blame theHD for all my troubles.
Many thanks.
I forgot to say, that just before the HD had a midlife crisis, I had 200GB approx left on it space wise. i was just in the middle of sorting through it to back-up.
