Hi,
I have a Barracuda 7200.11 500GB SATA - ST3500620AS. Till yesterday it was working fine without any issue. Then I had a normal shutdown at night and today morning when I booted the system BIOS does not detect the drive.
The drive is secondary hence could boot into the system, but have all my data on that drive.
I have read that through some method we could get the data back via some kind of firmware upgrade.
Could I please know the process of doing the same if the Hard Disk is not being detected in the BIOS or Disk Manager.
The Hard Disk Warranty (from Warranty Validation Tool on Seagate) shows that its valid until 2013.
Thank you for all the help

Tons of post on this problem, Your drive is probably not affected by the firmware update like mine same model # same drive actually it is funny that your expire date is the exact same as mine as well.
Your problem is classified as a BYD and just scroll down this forum alone at the first page AND YOU WILL SEE Seagate IGNORANCE ON THIS PROBLEM, You will have to pay Seagay money to there I365 data team and pay for data recovery. A fix is out there but trust me it is complicated and unless you are a tech guru it's not happening.
Just do not buy anything Seagate from here on or recommend it and post complaints to various magazine authors to voice how a company as large as this not take full responsibility for a product line that is obviously flaky to say the least. The 7200.11 series is a perfect example on how a company will try to make a profit on something otherwise would be recalled from any other reputable company,.

We just had 2 of those go on the same day. There is no solution so just return the drive and get another brand if possible.

Ya right dude you trying to have this user do the run around with Seagate, UNLESS YOUR DRIVE IS AFFECTED BY THE FIRMWARE UPDATE THEN EVEN IF YOU ARE EXPERIENCING A BYD PROBLEM IT IS NOT THE SAME ISSUE. Seagate thinks they have isolated the problem to a firmware update and hence maybe they have for a particular amount of HD with that firmware update.
What about all the other users having the same type issues on the 7200.11 series drives what about them. Easy so there engineering group which is paid heavenly has diagnosed the problem to a firmware update and they close the book on all the other 7200.11 series drives COME ON.
This is a bigger problem then the simple firmware update and they are aware of this and as the numbers grow and more and more people spread the word they will be forced to do something for all the poor users who are screwed out of there data.

Hi, Thank you for your response. I have also read that as this is a Firmware problem at manufacturers end - I am entitled free data recovery but there is no way where I could go or send my disk to and get the data back which is currently there on the disk.
Anyone from Seagate or members here could suggest what is the process of getting the Firmware upgraded from Seagate so that I can get my data back?
Thanks for the responses.

Hello:
Please see the ALL FIRMWARE UPDATES thread at the top of this board.

Hi @AlanM, Thank you for your response. But the firmware upgrade holds true if your HDD is being detected and running. I applied the firmware to my other 500GB which was working with the same model no. But this disk I am talking about, is not being detected, and I want my data back as thats the only place I have stored my data
. In the announcement, Seagate did announce that it would recover the data free of cost for such disks but no one seems to know how to handle this issue.
Thanks

Right, the free data recovery is for victims of a specific seize-up problem, and that problem's symptoms do not include non-detection. Unfortunately, you'll need to look elsewhere for data recovery options.

@AlanM Thanks again for your prompt response. But as far as I understand based on my research online, the issue that the disk is working fine and suddenly after shutdown and start at power on this particular model fails to detect in the BIOS or Disk Manager. Seagate issued a statement that for all those users whose disk has been affected by this issue, a free upgrade of the firmware would be made. Data on the disk would not be affected. But no one is able to suggest where we need to get this free upgrade of the firmware made.
Thanks
