Re: Barracuda 7200.11 firmware- What we know...

Here are repair procedures for Seagate 7200.11 drives:

http://sites.google.com/site/seagatefix/

http://www.msfn.org/board/solution-seagate-7200-t128807-n.html

It appears that the procedure for a Maxtor model may be the same:

http://forum.hddguru.com/hard-disk-drives-data-recovery-and-repair-f1.html

See the following technical bulletin:

Re: Barracuda 7200.11 firmware- What we know...

Where do we post our problem reports?  Oddly I was able to recover after much work.

Drive innaccessible

Adaptec 3405 RAID cards in both production and development server.

Moved (2) drives in RAID 1 set from development server to production.   Development server had

been rebooted 3 times over a year with these drives before moving to production server.  Import

of RAID 1 set into production server proceeded normally.  Production server was then rebooted 7

times during upgrade from VMWare ESX 3.5 to 4.0.  During this process one of the moved drives

was no longer seen by the RAID card after boot.  The drive was inaccassible even after using

Adapec BIOS tools to scan for drives.  Moved drives back to development server to work on RAID

set with failed drive.  Rescanned with Adaptec RAID tools a few more times and then was finally

seen again by RAID controller.  RAID set was rebuilt automatically and no further issues over

two weeks later.  These servers are on 24/7 and only rebooted typically during a February

window.

Problem Drive:
S/N: 5TE0GR1B
ST31000333AS
P/N: 9FZ136-301
Firmware: CC1H
Date Code: 09232
Site Code: WU

As far good drive:
S/N: 5TE0GTYR
ST31000333AS
P/N: 9FZ136-301
Firmware: CC1H
Date Code: 09232
Site Code: WU

If you have an attachment, upload it to a file sharing service and link to it, preferably with a direct link that avoids the ads, etc.

Re: Barracuda 7200.11 firmware- What we know...

Hello and thank you for starting this post.  I stumbled across it after spending almost 5 days trying to recover the data from my brother's Seagate 7200.11 hard drive.  The mode (ST3500620AS) is one of the effected models.

Your post mentions a kit that we can purchase or share but does not give any information on it.  I'm wondering if you could be so kind as to give me additional information on it or where I can purchase it.

My brother (as I sometimes do) failed to back up his HD regularly and now, all his important data that he needs is on it.  It's a lesson for all.

Your providing me this information is most appreciated.

Thanks and kind regards.  Bill

Re: Barracuda 7200.11 firmware- What we know...

I have the external seagate expansion drive 2TB.

Lately it stopped working and I cannot see it on my computer.

Is it possible that this model has been "infected"?

Re: Barracuda 7200.11 firmware- What we know...

Many people adapt a Nokia CA-42 cable.

Alternatively you could purchase a USB-to-RS232C adapter that has already been terminated for you, eg ...

http://rayshobby.net/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/pl2303_shop.jpg

Look for adapters based on Prolific's PL-2303 USB-serial bridge chip. Suitable drivers are downloadable from Prolific's web site.

Re: Barracuda 7200.11 firmware- What we know...

I've seen some tutorial on how to fix with a Nokia cable.

Unless I am mistaken, you are suggesting to do something like that

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqC4VNHkjvc

This means that I will have to dissasemble my external case, which isn't the best thing to do because my drive is still on warranty.

The thing is, that if I send it back to Seagate, I won't be able to recover my files which is of vital importance to me...
