Re: Barracuda Green not detected, strange sound at startup

I just checked the S/N of my disk, and they both starts with 5YD7, so I don't think there is a link here.

Re: Barracuda Green not detected, strange sound at startup

Well, that puts a damper on my idea.

I wonder what's making the tone.

I have my 5 disks installed in a Synology Disk Station DS508.  SMART info is on, and the drives are always checked for temp and integrity.

The drive that failed showed absolutely no warning signs.  It didn't get gradually louder, quieter, slower, unreliable or anything.  I simply came home from a friends house one afternoon and my drive was making that very tone and my system stated "degraded" volume 1.  I am however very greatful that I have it set up on a 1 disk failure safety - currently wondering if I should change everything over to a 2 disk failure safety.

Cootes, I don't know if you know this but a raid can mark a good drive out as bad drive, there is a way to reset the drive but I'm not sure how it's done myself as I never have any need for it, have a read ot this lot
