Re: Barracuda XT 3TB Won't Link at 6GB/s on Sata III

On my computer, the speeds are different between a 3GB/s drive and a 6GB/s drive. To me, it looks like the faulty drives are reporting, via the drive chipset, that they can only do 3GB/s, so the SATA controller is only allowing that speed.

My mainboard is a Gigabyte GA-790FXTA-UD5R with a Marvell 9128 SATA III RAID controller. (I've also got access to an AMD and another Marvell controller, and the faulty drives report the same on each.)

Re: Barracuda XT 3TB Won't Link at 6GB/s on Sata III

I assume you have loaded the

Marvell Console Driver (SATA3)1.0.0.10270.30 MB2009/11/10

http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3258#driver

It could also be that the board pre-dates the 3TB drive, so the tech wasn't available to fully recognise the newer spec drive, if the console driver isn't the issue I would send Gigabyte a mail and ask if they know of any incompatabilities and possible fixes.

Re: Barracuda XT 3TB Won't Link at 6GB/s on Sata III

Adaptec has issues with 3TB drives.  They sent me a special firmware for my 6445 to supposedly fix it.  I am also using the 3TB Seagate XT with CC44 firmware.  I'm linking at 6.0Gb/s but I'm getting errors.  I just installed the 18304 firmware and am still getting the errors.  Time to call Adaptec again.  If anyone wants the firmware I can email it to you.

Thx, I suspected this a while ago, cheers for confirming it.

[ Edited ]

I just installed an ST33000651AS with FW CC43.  It shows as 3.0Gb/s transfer rate in BIOS.  I have an Intel DZ68DB mobo that supports SATA III.  I've tried all the ports and multiple cables. No luck.

Seagate still doesn't have a CC44 download available.  Did anyone get this working?

Re: Barracuda XT 3TB Won't Link at 6GB/s on Sata III

What sort of speeds are drive to drive transfers achieving?

It maybe saying it's 3GB/s, but if it's transfering a 500mb file in a matter of 30 or less seconds then it would seem it's just a reported bug but the drive is moving it as it should be.

Just noticed you have this as a blank drive, if your boot drive is sata 2 then it might just be that it caps all other drives, where if this was the boot drive it would show the 6GB/s, bit like slow and fast memory, the PC drops the faster ones back to match the slower ones.

Re: Barracuda XT 3TB Won't Link at 6GB/s on Sata III

Same issue here

I have a LSI 9260-8i and I have 5 disks in a Raid6 array. The MegaRAID software tells me that 1disk is running @6Gbps and the 4disk are running @3Gbps.The MegaRAID software gives me also the firmware of the disks, the 6Gbps disk has FW CC44 and the 4 3Gbps disks have FW CC43.

I have disconnected 2 FW 43 disks from the array and put them back on the array with no luck the disks still running @3Gpbs.

So I do think it is a firmware issue here.

Re: Barracuda XT 3TB Won't Link at 6GB/s on Sata III

How are these connected bud?

Most MB's have only two 6GB/s slots, some have four on higher end boards, is it not possible you have 1 running 6 GB/s as the boot and the others although one or maybe more but not all are on 6 GB/s ports so the raid slows it all down to the only standard that all the drives can comply to in this set up?

[ Edited ]

Connected true the LSI 9260-8i raid-controller as a RAID6 array, as mentioned in my previous message. In the MegaRAID software I can see on what speeds the drives are running. So the software gives me that 1 drive is running @6Gbps with FW CC44 and 4 drives are running @3Gbps with FW CC43.

See the pics, right upper corner is the FW version of the disk, link speed is also in the pic
