Barracuda drive failure

Greetings all!

Drive type: Barracuda 7200.11 (500 Gb)

S/N 9QM1TJXY

Firmware: SD15

I am led to believe that there is an update for this drive.  It certainly points me to download an ISO when I run a serial number check on the drive.  My problem is, my PC does not get beyond POST check any more with this drive attached.  It hangs before the machine can boot.  On another forum I read a claim that if I send the drive back to Seagate so that they can flash it to the later firmware, they will recover any data on it for free - is this so because there is some important data on the drive?

From the Seagate update site, I'm 99% sure that the firmware is the problem - the serial number checker gives me an ISO, the model and serial numbers tally, and the only thing stopping me from trying to flash it myself is it hanging the computer when it starts.  The drive itself sounds healthy, it spins up normally and gives no indication of head problems.

Can someone confirm whether or not I should be pressing Seagate for free data recovery at the time I return this drive?

Re: Barracuda drive failure

Your description of the problem is consistent with the BSY firmware bug that afflicts 7200.11 models. I believe that Seagate still offers free data recovery services in such cases.

Otherwise there is a relatively straightforward DIY repair.
