the 1.5TB drive i purchased required the SD1A firmware.
Afterwards, no problem. I filled up her in about 2 weeks right to the brim within a usb enclosure.
No problems.
I removed the drive from the usb enclosure to the HTPC computer desktop.
It was not clicking when I first put it in, but I noticed it a week later.
Click Click CLick.
Everything *seemed* to run okay.
Got a bit worried, googled the problem, eyes bugged out, ran seatools
no problem says seatools.
ran hd tune.
ah *HAH*
during read test, especially during the random read test part,
every time the HD made a clicking noise, the read speed went to ~ 0 MB/s.
also during surface error scan,
every time the HD made the click noise, the surface scan stopped dead at that spot until the
HD went again.
So what did i do?
*sheepishly*
at this point I was very frustrated,
turned the computer off with the power switch, cold. *upset*
then took the the drive out, gave it a lil friendly poke
asking it to quit it. removed the cables to the drive,
reattached.
secured the drive again to the HTPC.
and
what the heck.... the clicking noise dissappeared.
ran HD tune again. surface scan went vROOOM without any halts, super fast.
ran read test, test went at a steady read speed without any clicking noise or any sudden spikes to 0MB/s.
This is all so confusing.
What could it have been?
I wish I could provide a solution but the only thing I've done that could've made any kind of difference
is while the HD is on, just shut er down holding the power button.
*sigh* This mickey mouse stumbled upon solution for my case is nerve wrecking
just don't know when that clicking noise will come back to haunt me.
