Re: Brand new drive "clicking"

DiamondJ / Gunslinger,
Send them back for a warranty replacement! I assume their still under warranty. Use the warranty checker to the left, and provide the SN#. You can do the RMA entirely online.

Good luck,

Re: Brand new drive "clicking"

Same problem as you, folks, on my brand new STM3750330AS: clicking since the first power-up.

Drive works, but pretty slowly (when clicking the drive does not operate).

After looking at all the posts (there are several threads opened on the same subject) I'll return the drive to the shop for an exchange with a new drive (but I'll have to pay for shipment !#$%!!! ).

Re: Brand new drive "clicking"

Just recently bought the 1 TB drive myself, along with an entirely new computer.  Was very disappointed and worried to hear the loud click of the Harddrive going almost consistantly. Being the day before christmas, I'll likely be more than two weeks getting a replacement now, leaving me without the use of this computer.

Very disapointing, and I don't know if I'll bother to buy again, especialy with what I'm now hearing about seagate in general.

Re: Brand new drive "clicking"

That's very disappointing, especially during Xmas period, but my experience was not that bad: I returned the drive to the seller (on line) and in 4 days I got back a brand new one which is now perfectly working since months. They even remboursed me the mailing expenses to send the drive back, so I cnnot say being totally unsatisfied.

Hope you'll get your replacement as fast as I got mine.

Re: Brand new drive "clicking"

I think this problem isn't just on the ST3 drives.  I have an ST9 drive (laptop momentous), and it continually makes the click-shhhhhh noise.  The load/unload count is going through the roof on the SMART parameters and the performance is abysmal also (each time it does this it stalls a write, making it useless for streaming data to - I'm thinking I accidentally bought a drive from Seawait instead ;-).

Ticket opened some days ago and several threads posted to but no response from Seagate. I won't be buying Seagate again.

Re: Brand new drive "clicking"

I bought 3x the ST31500341AS 1.5TB model

P/N 9JU138-302

FW CC1H

The first drive I started to test produced a very loud click sound every second like the head is banging to the outside. Nevertheless I was still able to read/write to it.

I left the drive like this without using it for an hour. Maybe it is some kind of selfroutine in the firmware to check for bad sectors or whatever. It was just an idea I had. But no improvement.

Today I checked it with the Seatools under DOS and the Short test passed. After I have done that and the acoustic test the clicking sound is not so loud anymore but constanly ongoing like it is reading/writing all the time even under Seatools when I'm not doing any test.

Now I run the HDTune 2.55 benchmark and it seems my drive has really a problem.

Max. is 124MB/s

Min. is 6.4MB/s

Avg. is 87,6MB/s

Every 5-10% in the x-achis it is going down to around 10MB/s and in the same time the drive is making a soft click-shhhhhhh sound.

So I connected my 2nd drive and after spinning up there is no strange clicking sound at all.

In HDTune it is doing just fine.

Max. 130,2 MB/s
Min. 58,1 MB/s
Avg. 101,8 MB/s

I will copy some data on it and continue monitoring.

If I'm lucky I just got one disc with a hardware problem which I will RMA then.

I hope my other 2 discs won't get the same problem...

I would like to install Firmware CC1J to be sure this is not firmware related.

But I couldn't find any download link nor changelog so far.

IMHO to have a open firmware policy would be an improvement for the customer.

Especially when there is obviously a lot of problems with the firmware.

A "solution to my madness"

[ Edited ]

the 1.5TB drive i purchased required the SD1A firmware.

Afterwards, no problem.  I filled up her in about 2 weeks right to the brim within a usb enclosure.

No problems.

I removed the drive from the usb enclosure to the HTPC computer desktop.

It was not clicking when I first put it in, but I noticed it a week later.

Click Click CLick.

Everything *seemed* to run okay.

Got a bit worried, googled the problem, eyes bugged out, ran seatools

no problem says seatools.

ran hd tune.

ah *HAH*

during read test, especially during the random read test part,

every time the HD made a clicking noise, the read speed went to ~ 0 MB/s.

also during surface error scan,

every time the HD made the click noise, the surface scan stopped dead at that spot until the

HD went again.

So what did i do?

*sheepishly*

at this point I was very frustrated,

turned the computer off with the power switch, cold.   *upset*

then took the the drive out, gave it a lil friendly poke

asking it to quit it.  removed the cables to the drive,

reattached.

secured the drive again to the HTPC.

and

what the heck.... the clicking noise dissappeared.

ran HD tune again.  surface scan went vROOOM without any halts, super fast.

ran read test, test went at a steady read speed without any clicking noise or any sudden spikes to  0MB/s.

This is all so confusing.

What could it have been?

I wish I could provide a solution but the only thing I've done that could've made any kind of difference

is while the HD is on, just shut er down holding the power button.

*sigh*  This mickey mouse stumbled upon solution for my case is nerve wrecking

just don't know when that clicking noise will come back to haunt me.

Re: A "solution to my madness"

Good news for you, Charlie.

Unfortunately I have the same symptoms but my problem does not dissappear.

The good thing is I have 2 more drives of same type to compare.
And both are doing fine.

P/N 9JU138-302 with FW CC1H (there is no SD1A for this version).

So I can't say anything bad about CC1H so far.

Only one drive is driving me crazy.

What I have noticed is that the SMART attribute "Reallocated Sector Count" is increasing.
When I checked it the first time (e.g. in HDTune under Health, data column) it was already like 50. Now it is almost 1000.
That is what I believe the constantly reading/writing sound that I have even if I'm not accessing the drive.
It is doing some kind of health check and reallocating sectors. My other 2 drives have still a value of 0.
I hope it will remain like this for those two.

The faulty one I will replace over my dealer.

solution to your problem

As this forum is only for suggestions from one user to another and

is in no way going to resolve the issue

unless it is some sort of configuration issue.

As this is a hardware issue and stands to be the hardware issue

seeing as the drive is compared to another drive of the exact same model.

You can go to online chat support

and ask if this is grounds for RMA even though the SeaTools have

said it checks out okay.

I can't see why they would say no being as we have done series of

tests that points to the HD performing in an abnormal way.

I as well have another drive of the same model, so my last

resort was going to be backing up all my data off the clicking

drive and chatting with tech support and let them know i'm

sending the drive their way.

But it is relieving to know when I do the warranty check to see

how long my drive is warrantied for that

it is until the year 2013.

I can tell you right now, I probably will upgrade my drive

within 5 years.  So I feel comforted by the warranty.

at the same time, I feel a sense of perhapse creating a

3 disk raid setup with parity in case one of the drive

decides to go haywire.  I can still then recover my data.

I've never had any hard drives die before in my life except

maybe few bad sectors

with WD 500 meg drives.

Man.  I wish I knew the answer to what cause the drive to do this.

I think everyone should at least do a simple test with

HD tune, and perform a read test, or surface quick scan test.

If the test all of a sudden hangs while making the clicking noise

that is grounds to be calling tech support.

Good luck to you all.

I guess I should welcome myself to the club?!

I have purchased a Seagate (obviously) 1000gb (32mb) 7200-II rpm sata2 Barracuda (ST31000340AS)

I have the same problem as many have posted, I installed it, powered on, and then thought "Oh God, what did I do?".  Loud clicking sound, very troubling, I thought chunks of a broken fan went flying or something, sound stopped after post, looked in the tower and everything seemed fine.  I have not actually formatted or partitioned the drive yet, nor have I powered down since that rought start-up.  The package I bought said it had a firmware update, which is when i researched that there have been firmware problems with these drives.  Not sure if this is a random problem, but if I hear a single click, sending it back for a fresh one.  When I say random problem, judging by this forum, it seems fairly common, hoping adding yet another worried costumer to this forum may invoke some research and support into this problem.
