Count Dracula could not count the hard drives that I have and use and I never have seen such incompetence in manufacturing as this. First two Seagate drives ever purchased and both are impossible to use on any of my systems.
Apparent in these forums is a manufacturing defect. Yet the cracker jack moderators of this forums have created stickys that acknowledge this issue and yet sub diverge it as another ailment.
The firmware update, outside of being another disaster of implementation, did not fix this issue. Leaving me one option to pull the drives of the shelf and throw them in the dumpster where they belong.
Model: ST32000542AS
I wonder how long this post will survive?

Not long with an attitude like that mate, and thx for the tribute, you say nothing of how you use the drives, what they are running on, now read up on HDD care and you will see one of the most common reasons a HDD fails or goes bad is because you use a 10 bucks psu, which in turn makes it impossible for the drive to function as it was designed to, I use a spread of drives from maxtor through to WD, and they all degrade over time, and ones that have failed before which I'll add have only been WD ones only did so because I used cheap stuff to power and use it with, we're here to help ppl out, if you look you will find dozens of accepted solutions to problems that we've sorted for ppl, for all we know it's possible that you yourself have broken them due to user error, as you don't say anything other than the venomous spit you already have it doesn't leave much to work with does it.
And as I'm not a Seagate employee and thus don't have to suck it up to you, you'll get no help from me, because I'm sick to death of ppl like yourself, gosh help your Doctor if he ever gets it wrong, still you can still sue your mother for faulty hardware can't you.

So, your handle is "competitorcompetitorcompetitor" and your post was, as Cantbecanit said, quite antagonistic, but let me give it a go anyway.
What is the problem?
What are the symptoms?
What have you tried?
Have you ever tested the drive(s) with SeaTools?
If you encountered (a) drive(s) you knew were faulty, did you warranty-replace them?

See, told you Alan, a spammer using WD but really promoting Samsung.
If this was me, I would've replied by now, especially as if I'd bought 2 drives that were in his words....no good, tata Mr Samsung employee, back of the class, must try harder.

Well.
We tried everything. They just don't work installed where pagefile.sys exists or the OS, got tired of running chkdisk /f. When they were installed in a unit with no adjustable parameters, like a MP, they work fine until apparently they click for the first time and then I have to reset it.
But to answer your sarcasm. I had looked dilegently on other forums to find so many with the same issue and not a single course of action to a resolution. There isn't going to be one when the drive enters a low power state and dumps the cache. I joined this forum to make sure Seagate could read what I think about their products at this point.
And to anwer your criticizm about me promoting other products, I am not and could care less.
I actually thought that these drives could have been a viable alternative, which is why I bought them.
Reformatting didn't work.
Reformatting on a different console didn't either.
Swapping to new interface cables didn't work.
Tried installing in external hard drive controller, that just made it worse.
My only conclusion, not for sure since i didn't design these units, is it is the local controller on the drive itself. I came to that conclusion after running three different programs and finding no bad sectors.
I have never joined a manufacturer site to find answers I have always been able to find resolution myself. And I have had other manufacturers drives exhibit the same behavior at the end of some sort of a life expectancy. BUT never right out of the box with multiple drives.

I would have replied sooner but I work for a living.
I am no spammer.
I don't promote anything as meaning I would be a personal benefactor of such a promotion.
I am an end user. One who promoted Seagate as an alternative in savings.
I guess the Joke was on me.

Can you post your SMART data and/or log? Also, what date and site code was on your drive? I'm curious if it's similar to mine. Site WU and Date code 11084.
I've had 4 out of 5 drives fail.
Let's me objective and leave emotion out of it. With 4 out of 5 drives failing, I'm emotionally stressed, but venting doesn't fix my issue or help me figure out if I can trust any drives I RMA.

OK, but hopefully you can understand why we thought so (and could be forgiven for continuing to think so).
But perhaps, for the sake of enlightenment, you could logon to WD's forum and register as "SeagateSeagateSeagate".
Anyway, I certainly don't know what the answer is, but I'd suggest you contact Customer Service directly whether by phone, email, or chat. That is, if you're interested in an answer and not just in ranting.
