2 things here
First off check to see if you are affected by a FIRMWARE bug only certain 500 GB HD with your model # is affected by this problem as per SeaGate.
Second if it is not affected by the firmware update SeaGate will refer you to there data recovery team I365 which will make as much money off of your unfortunate experience as they can
SeaGate says only certain drives are affected, they are lyeing out right because 1000's of users have the exact same problem as you with the 7200.11 series drives, And it happens in the exact same sequence. Shut your computer down restart and BANG your drive is gone.
Recommend do to what most people are doing. Let other users know including forums you visit call Seagate voice your displeasure they will not care but if any1 at this company does there job they will at least log the complaint, Let tech mags know about this and any1 else personal and web based.
sorry about your data loss, Same thing here my 500 GB Seagate 1 year old BCK-UP drive disappeared BYD problem . What I have learned from here is I will be purchasing a HD server 3 HDs so 3x back up and never purchase anything Seagate has to offer. As for my 500GB drive I am still trying to get my information back and for the warranty all Seagate does is sell warranties junk. 5 year warranty think about it who cares if you loose your HD access so they replace there tin cans with another one what worth is that, they know the data is unreplacable and very valuable to the end users, Its a recall on the 7200.11 series drives ona ll of them that they are not admitting but in the end hopefully between the recession and this crud they eventually fold.
