Download and install SeaTools or a third party app called HD Tune.

The above apps will provide you with all the information related to the drive(s - will provide information from other drive vendors in your rig).

LOL SeaTool's installation crashed saying my drive was bad...

Oh my gosh! Is my drive bricked?!? That's a complete surprise to me! 


I'll try that other app, who knows...

EDIT: HD tune doesn't tell me more than I already know... so I'll let other people say what their actual config is.

EDIT 2: Oh, I get it! The installation won't work because it needs to write to the documents folder... and it's on a bricked drive right now.

So what do you do for a living that you can say that firmware engineering and rocket science aren't complex fields?  The fact that the industry is more mature does not at all imply that the complexity level has gone down.  Quite the opposite actually.

Of course I know that the coding for controllers has grown more complex (I'm a projects manager for web application programming BTW)... but come'on, you can't say that 7200RPM hard drives are not part of the (very) mature technologies. But let's not get into an argument about who thinks this tech is junk or not (sorry to have started it)... I'd much rather put my energies into trying to fix the darn things!

Adobe CS4 has errored out and closed twice in the past 2 days and windows error reporting has told me that this is because of a hard disk issue and the smart in speedfan show me drive fitness as 64%, it used to be a lot higher. I'm afraid to shut off my computer now.

Don't! Backup all of your stuff before you do anything else! If you don't have another hard drive to put your data on, get one of those cheap 16GB USB thumbdrives and backup all you can... especially documents, fonts and the whole Documents & Settings folder if you can.
