Re: Firmware updates to fix clicking noises

Thanks. I've been to that site quite a few times. It's a great body of work. I'm using Win ME's Scandisk, Defrag (?), USB mass storage drivers, and USB 2.0 EHCI drivers.

I don't know if I've ever really loved Win9x, it's just that it's taken me a long time to become comfortable with it. I don't have the perserverance or resilience to undertake another long learning process, so it's inertia not love that's keeping me from moving on.

There are mods and drivers that provide 48-bit LBA support, so modern hard drives can still be used with Win98SE. Plus I have several old PCs that people have dumped on me, so there's plenty of hardware around, too.

I agree about the fun part. I enjoy the kind of hacking that pushes the boundaries of hardware and software.

Re: Firmware updates to fix clicking noises

been away from the forum for a while....gonna be moving house next week and will then try to sort this issue out...thought i'd get in touch first before this drive gets resigned to data backup rather than than the high performance drive it should be

drive heads still parking frequently .....stutters in osx and in xp

i have the 500gig 7200 model installed on a macbook pro.....

i am not averse to changing out pieces of hardware but when it comes to the software side, on xp, i need someones guidance

it seems there is a dell upgrade floating around, right ???

the issue here, for me, is that using xp on bootcamp will probably not allow me to enter BIOS or oot-from-disc etc (not that i remember much about this from my pc days)

has anyone found a mac solution to upgrade the firmware....hdapm may be an option, though i don't understand how to use it....also that doesn't work for the xp, under bootcamp

any help would be greatly appreciated

Re: Firmware updates to fix clicking noises

Hello, I need help with a hard drive model ST9160412AS, it came with my hp elitebook 6930p laptop with firmware revision 0003hpm1 and I installed the one posted on the hp website which is B006hpm1, now the computer is locking up randomly, is there any way to get the version 0005hpm1 which seems to be the latest one for my drive? thank you.

Re: Firmware updates to fix clicking noises

The clicking and freezing may be unrelated to your firmware.

The following thread states that an update to 0005SDM1 from 0003HPM1caused freezing to disappear, "but Everest can't detect the temperature of the hard drive, or provides the wrong number":

Does your drive still respond correctly to SMART tools?

Re: Firmware updates to fix clicking noises

Hi Everyone,

I have purchased  this drive:

Seagate Momentus 7200.4 500Gb drive ST9500420AS with FW: 0002SDM1

Can anyone verify if there is another problem that goes with the clicking, like, when the Os(Windows 7) boots up, it is either slow or hangs? Will this FW upgrade fix the clicking issues with the other I have just described?

Thanks,

Chuck

Re: Firmware updates to fix clicking noises

Yes, even the diagnostic tool of the computer says that hard drive is ok, the error of the OS its Kernel Power event id 41 and it showed up as soon I installed firmware version B006HPM1 from the hp's website, firmware 0005SDM1 seemed to fix the problem but after two days, same thing, the OS locked up again. :smileysad:

Re: Firmware updates to fix clicking noises

Sorry to drag this thread out of the dump... but, I have a 7200.4 that is driving me crazy. Except... I am one of the early adopters, so my current firmware is 0001SDM1. Looking at your table, I'm guessing the closest one I should try is 0004SDM1(.lod). It's interesting that the extension is missing....

Re: Firmware updates to fix clicking noises

I noticed that error, too. Furthermore, the "updated" firmware at the end of the line is identical to the original firmware at the start of the line, which makes things even less clear.

I don't know what to suggest. ISTM that there is no guarantee that an upgrade will be safe. At the very least, I would backup your data.

Re: Firmware updates to fix clicking noises

FYI for community: for ST9500420AS with 0001SDM1 firmware, Flashing to 0004SDM1 at least does not brick the drive. Currently testing it for reliability. Will post again in the future with more information.
